--------------------------------------------
Even if I'm just arranging books, I still can't remove the stupid smile that is plastered in my face. I finally have a friend in school! I didn't even mind that I didn't eat dinner last night. I'm just too happy to be bothered by the witches.
Today is my first day in my job and I know what your thinking. What is a girl like me who has more money that she can spend in a lifetime working at a bookstore?
Well I guess I have more time that I can burn and working here is so much better than staying at the house with the witches. Besides, I absolutely adore Ben and Ana, the owners. They are so unlike my grandparents but also alike in so many ways. Where my grands are aloof and cold to others, Ben and Ana are kind and friendly. But something I like about the four of them is that they never fail to show their love to the ones they love and they also give great advises.
Since it's still relatively early, only few are here and they are just lounging by the makeshift reading area. After rearranging the books, I went to the counter and talk to Ana whose managing it.
"Hey, I've already arranged the books, is there anything you want me to do?"
Smiling at me, Ana shook her head. "Nothing at the moment dear, I'll be sure to call you when I need you. Why don't you relax by the lounge and read some books while waiting."
I stared at her like she's grown two heads. "Is this really what I'm supposed to do? I never thought It'll be this relaxed."
Laughing at me, Ana gently pushed me towards the lounge, "just go Skye, I'll call you when I need you, okay?"
"Okay. You know where to find me Ana!"
I then looked for a book to read and when I found one I went to seat and started reading. When I stole a glance by the window, I saw Light and his friends walking by and surprise surprise, he also glanced by my way. I smiled timidly at him and what do you know, he smiled back! Light rarely smiles and it's shocking to see him smile. I think the last time I saw him smile was when we were kids. I guess I spaced out for a minute because the next thing I know, they're gone.
I missed the time when we were still friends. He was my best friend but I guess I hurt him too much for him to ignore me at school or he just didn't want to be associated with the trash.
The longer I contemplated, the more my mood deflated. I never stopped treating him as my friend. And from the way he saved me from Coleen, the more I will treasure our friendship even if it's only one sided now. It's for the best I think, coz if Coleen knows that I care for him, she might do something to Light.
Ana told me I can go home by lunch but I insisted till closing time since I have nothing to do. She seems happy with my decision since she doesn't have company. John went to their daughter's house to help her husband fix their garden.
My time in the bookshop was fun especially since Ana taught me a few card tricks. That old lady has fast hands you'll never know what got you. With all the tricks she taught me, I learned nothing. I suck at distraction where most of the tricks are in need of. After cleaning and helping Ana close the store, we went our separate ways.
I went back to the hell hole where the witches are waiting. As soon as I set foot on the house, Miranda started speaking.
"Where have you been? Do you know what I have gone through just to save your ass? Your father called and he was asking for you. I went to your room and what did I find? Nothing! I made up an excuse so that your father won't blame me for your wondering ass!" She was fuming and I don't get why she has to make excuses for me.
"I went to work, you didn't have to make up excuses for me Miranda." I said politely.
"You ungrateful bitch! If your father finds out that I don't give you attention that he thinks you deserve I wouldn't have to make up excuses for you! If it is up to me, you would have been long gone in this household. You don't deserve to stay here since you are not part of our family!" She was breathing so hard and her face is so red from anger I would have laughed if she isn't looking murderous.
"I'm sorry. I'll just be in my room." I mumbled and went to my room just to avoid her anger. She can be pretty violent when pushed to the limit. I would know, she beat so bad before I ended up in the hospital for two weeks. My grandparents and my father never knew because she threatened on hurting the helpers and also their family that is why we kept it a secret. I've kept a copy of the medical record just in case I will need it.
"You are not allowed to eat dinner as your punishment!" She shouted when I was by the stairs. I just shrugged and went to my room.
I laid in my bed facing my ceiling thinking of how my life will be when I leave this place. I've been dreaming of leaving for so long and now I can almost feel it. I've never wanted something so bad as leaving and I will do everything in my power to achieve it. With my love ones supporting me and a new friend, I just might make it till then.
