"Shattering Trust"

Austin’s POV

I opened my eyes and I could tell I was still in pain. Not as much pain as that night, but still in pain. I looked around me. My eyes scanned the hospital room. They stopped short when they reached Caitlin. She was asleep in a chair. I could see her shoes by the door of the room and I could also see a slip of her pink dress peaking out of my hoodie.

I remember everything that happened, which I’m assuming was last night, but I could be wrong. Caitlin fell asleep and Dave was calling me from upstairs. After they questioned her and everything I ran upstairs with Dave. I tore off my hoodie as I ran up the stairs and followed him. I guess Caitlin found it. Then I remember he told me a bunch of stuff, and then all of the sudden he ripped out a knife and plunged it into my side.

But what no one knows is that I still have the real envelope. They took the fake one. I replaced the one I took from Caitlin with a fake. So they both are off to Europe with the wrong blueprints.

I pushed off the blankets and sat up. I put my legs over the side of the bed. Well, that wasn’t too bad. I’m probably on tons of medicine right now that is killing the pain. I picked my head up and looked back at Caitlin.

She must have stayed here with me. She was still wearing the same clothes and everything so… As for my clothes I was wearing nothing except a hospital gown. No underwear or anything. And I can’t forget the big bandage wrapped around my waist.

I pushed myself to me feet. I took a step towards her, stumbling a little, but I got better with every step.

I stopped in front of the chair. She was all curled up and sound asleep. She looked…well let’s just say tired and stressed. She had not very noticeable dark circles, dirty clothes, and her hair was in a messy bun.

I put my hand on her shoulder.

“Caitlin.” I whispered.

She stirred but didn’t wake up.

“Caitlinnn.”

Her eyes shot open and she stood before me. She looked shocked and excited in a way.

“Austin!” She flung her arms around my neck. I groaned a little and hugged her back. “Sorry.” She let go.

“Why are-“

“Get back in the bed.” She pointed behind me.

“But I want to-“

“Austin.” She smiled.

“Why are you here?” I asked without moving.

“I wanted to wait for you to wake up. I wanted to make sure you were okay too.” She looked down and shuffled her feet.

I hugged her tightly even though it hurt so bad.

“Thank you.” I managed to say through the pain. I let go and walked back to the bed and sat on the edge. I sat down and Caitlin had a hand over her eyes. “What?” I laughed.

“Your butt hangs out of the ball gown of yours.” She peaked through her hand to see if my butt was hidden, and dropped it to her side.

“You like it.” I winked and she just gave me one of her famous eye rolls.

“So...uh…What did you say happened?” I asked nervously. She was smart; she isn’t good at lying or being under pressure. So I’m praying she told them a fake story of how I was stabbed, and that it was somewhat believable.
