"Sleeping Beauty"
Caitlin’s POV
I tried my best to pick up the surf board, but it was unexpectedly very heavy. I managed to pick it up after a few minutes of struggling. Austin had taught me how to swim out and the stand up in the sand. He was already out in the water padding out to the big waves.
After a few more minutes I stopped paddling as I reached Austin. He was sitting on his board with one leg in each side, so I did the same.
“Oh hey, you made it. Took you long enough.” He joked.
“Shut up.” I smiled a little and looked out and saw a wave.
I guess Austin saw it too because he was already long gone heading towards it. I decided I would just sit this one out and watch him. I watched a few other surfers paddle out to the wave. Austin took me to a better beach with better waves. The one our beach house was one was very calm, so not many waves that were good for surfing were there.
I watched Austin’s every move as he stood up and surfed the wave like a pro. My jaw practically dropped as he rode the wave and then fell off after the wave died down. I sat on my board rocking with the little waves as Austin paddled toward me. I fixed my wet suit a little bit and Austin reached me. Yes, we both were wearing wet suits; I don’t know it was Austin’s idea.
“I thought you didn’t surf.” I crossed my arms and glared at him playfully.
“Well those years you went to school I learned to surf.”
“I can tell.”
“Aw come on. Just try it and if you fall you get back up on the board. Okay?” I heard him in the distance. He was fixing his wet suit as I paddled off to the huge wave coming for us. He looked up after he finished his sentence and saw me out in the distance. Sucker.
I might have been surfing once. Only once though. When I went to Hawaii with my family I learned. I was only twelve so, it was a while ago.
I got on the board and rode the wave just as good as Austin.
I still got it.
I should surf more, this is awesome! I jumped off the board as the wave died. I came to the surface and I remembered the look in Austin’s face when I passed him riding the wave. Priceless.
I paddled back to him with this dumbfounded look on his face.
“What the hell?” He asked.
“I’ve been surfing once. I guess I can still do it.”
“I guess so.” He smiled.
“You know I’m just as good as you…Maybe even better.” I smirked.
“Is that a challenge?”
“Hell ya it is.” I nodded my head.
“Fine.” He paused. “Well I’m going to-“He stopped and started paddling as fast as he could put towards a huge wave. Once I noticed it I was chasing after him, just on his tail.
Many waves later…
I paddled back to the shore behind Austin.
“I’m exhausted.”
“Same.” I agreed.
He put his board standing up in the sand. He then took mine without saying anything and did the same thing.
