“Defeated”
Caitlin’s POV
“You know what?!” Austin yelled.
There it is. Oh god… He did it. He snapped.
“What?!” My dad yelled and gripped my arm. I was trying to show that it didn’t hurt, but hell, he was hurting me.
“I never changed! You’re right! But I can control what side of me I want to let her see! I can push the bad side away and show her the best! I’ll treat her with the best because that’s what she deserves! I need to do that because you clearly didn’t do a good job.” Austin’s voice slowly lessened in volume with each sentence, and by the time he said his last sentence he was talking normally.
The tears broke afresh, but didn’t fall from my eyes yet. I looked at my dad. He looked angry…And defeated.
“Let’s go.” My dad mumbled as he pulled me down the hall.
“No!” Austin yelled from behind us.
“No?” My dad asked sarcastically.
“Hell no.”
“She’s my daughter, I own her.”
“She may be your daughter, but you don’t own her. She isn’t a piece of sh*t, but you treated her like it.”
“Who are you to tell me how I raised my daughter?!” He yelled. My dad was fuming with anger, but Austin was calm…And that was throwing my dad over the edge.
“Just saying.” Austin shrugged.
With that my dad’s self control was lost. He let go of me and lunged at Austin. Next thing I knew Austin was on the ground after my dad’s fist came in direct contact with his jaw. I cried his name and my dad turned around giving me a glare.
“What the hell?!” I cried.
“Oh shut up!” He yelled and came over to me.
My body was going weak and I was trembling. My dad’s hand rose in the air and he got closer to me. I fell to the ground just like Austin and grabbed my cheek which was now stinging.
My dad just back-handed me.
“Next time you talk back I’ll hit you as hard as I did for him.” My dad looked down at me and I cried.
“Leave.” I spoke through my teeth.
“What?”
“Leave before I call the cops.” I sat up and leaned against the hallway wall.
“Oh the old cop card.” He laughed. “You really want me to go? Trust me; you don’t want to stay with this buffoon.” He motioned to Austin who was behind me. Speaking of him, what is he doing? He isn’t even helping me!
“I love that buffoon. I’d pick him over you any day. I’d rather be safe and protected with him then with a drunk.” The words spilled out of my mouth. I hadn’t thought about what I had said until I heard myself say it.
“You think you’re protected?” He laughed. Okay, now I’m confused. “Honey, he is doing some things, and I don’t think you know about it.”
“You just can’t quit lying about him, can you?”
“It’s the truth.”
“Get out.” I pointed to the door and wiped the tears with the back of my hand.
