Over a week had passed since Nick Fury had last tried to recruit Kelsey and not once had he approached her again.
Put it to wishful thinking but Kelsey hoped he had actually listened to her threat. She preferred the shadows and of course that sounded unbelievably stereotypical.
But it kept her from attracting attention from media or the police. And she could easily hide her true identity in the darkness. When people didn't know who she was, it made everything so much easier.
Nick Fury had been pestering her for months now to join whatever team he was assembling and the fact that he'd just dropped recruiting her was utter bull and left her anxious as ever.
She could feel it in her bones, something was coming.
"Kelsey." A voice said pulling her from her thoughts.
"Oh hi, Damian." She smiled at the man before her.
"Yeah, hi. Sugar I've been standing in front of you for the past ten minutes. What on earth is going on in your head right now?" Damian asked leaning his arms on the counter of the desk she was behind. Damian was in his late twenties with short but unmanageably curly raven hair and olive skin.
She was at her job, in a world that fit her perfectly, a job where the walls were covered with hundreds and thousands of books and texts. She worked at a library and luckily it was very infrequently visited.
"It's nothing." Kelsey said standing up and taking the stack of books in front of her into her arms.
"You know that's a load of bull." Damian said as he followed after Kelsey. He ran his fingers through his slightly shaggy black hair trying to get it away from his piercing greens. The two of them began walking between the bookcases.
"You hang out with me way too much, you're starting to curse." Kelsey said with a proud smirk looking at her tanned friend as she handed him the stack of books which he did not complain about taking then taking another stack that was resting on a table they past.
"Who else am I supposed to hang out with? Berty and Alabast? They always act so lovey dovey."
"Yeah, they're married, that's what those people tend to do. Why don't you hang out with Christian? You know how lonely he gets, I'm sure he'd like someone to talk to." Kelsey asked taking the top book from the pile she'd forced Damian into carrying for her.
"I don't know it just feels weird when I am around him." Damian answered only to stop in his place as the subject of their conversation walk right in front of them down the aisles of bookshelves.
"Hey Christian!" Kelsey called out to the other man before he could disappear.
"Hello." Christian called back in a ghostly way before turning out of sight.
So the pair began to go between the winding rows of bookshelves returning the books to their homes. The two chatted the time away laughing at each other's stories. At some point the two had stopped walking around and settled at a table, Damian taking the chair and Kelsey sitting cross legged on top of the table. The books still left over on the cart, Kelsey simply flicked her wrist sending the books floating off to their proper homes. The two were laughing their buts off as they put away the last of the books when Alastor another paitron of Kelsey's library in his mid thirties with light blonde hair, freckels and green eyes came running to where the two were.
"Kelsey, there's an attack on New York City!" Alastor said panting slightly.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Damian asked straitening up.
"Berthilde and I were watching the news and there's some portal over Stark Tower. The reports are saying it's an alien invasion." Alastor spoke quickly. His words sent goosebumps up across Kelsey's forearms and she jumped off the table taking off in a sprint within a matter of seconds back to the main area of the library. Damian and Alabast were following close behind her but fell behind as she sped ahead.
In the lobby of the library Berthilde was sitting on a couch across from the sole TV she kept in the library, Christian was standing behind the couch staring intently at the television too.
"What's going on?" Kelsey rushed over to the pair slipping to a stop behind the couch that Alabast and Bethilde were behind, eyes glued to the television screen.
"We don't know." Berthilde said in absolute horror.
Plastered across the screen were scenes of absolute terror and mayhem, there were dead bodies, explosions, fires, people running and screaming in terror. And then there were these things, these creatures, no, aliens were attacking the civilians. The words "Alien Attack on New York City" were splayed across the screen as the reporters babbled along almost incoherently.
"Shit! Guys I've got to help." Kelsey hissed as she turned around jogging back to the help desk where she kept all her stuff. Damian and Christian who had fallen behind chasing after Kelsey, appeared next to the help desk both panting.
"You're going out there? But it's day!" Christian started as Kelsey rummaged through her bag without being able to find what she was looking for. Impatiently not finding what she needed Kelsey flipped her bag over dumping the contents all over the desk.
"I have to, innocent people are dying out there. I can't just do nothing!" Kelsey shouted finding her face mask and switch blades. Shedding the blue blazer she had on, Kelsey grabbed the black leather jacket she kept in her desk and quickly tied her hair back into a tight bun. Putting the knives into her pockets, Kelsey put on the facemask and quickly put on a pair of black fingerless gloves.
"You know what this means." Damian spoke grimly as he appeared directly in Kelsey's line of sight.
"Yeah, yeah I know. But I can't just stand by and do nothing."
"It's dangerous."
"Whenever I go out like this it's dangerous." She retorted motioning to her current get up dressed in all black.
Sighing Kelsey turned away from the friend and moving for the door only to be stopped by someone grabbing a hold of her arm. Kelsey did not look back instead just stopping for a moment to let them speak.
"Be careful out there." Christian said quietly and Kelsey nodded as he let go of her arm.
"Guys, protect the library!" She said quickly before rushing out the front door of the building. As soon as she was out the doors and onto the street Kelsey's ears were barraged by the sounds of gun fire and explosions.
Looking into the air, Kelsey could only stare in terror at the ginormous hole in the sky that had giant creatures and aliens coming flying through the portal.
"Fury what the hell were you going to tell me..."
