Dean?
Will?
Jack?
Thomas?
James?
A name, some goddamn name echoed through her head leaving Kelsey distraught confused and slightly hurt.
What the hell was that name and why couldn't she remember it?
The name was so familiar and so common place so why couldn't she remember it? It hurt so much.
The thought of him a ghost from a past she couldn't remember so far away and yet close. She could even picture him in a slight haze, chiseled features, tall, strong and... and nothing. There was something missing but not just something small or simple it was everything, it was important like not remembering it was killing her leaving her aching inside. Making her feel incomplete.
It was actually painful sometimes. She had such vivid dreams, like she could reach out and touch him when his hands grazed over her skin and left goosebumps they would be there when she'd wake up.
It was worse than her nightmares.
Something was coming and it was something big. There was no denying that.
Like clockwork, everyday Kelsey would wake up at 5am on the dot from the vivid dreams, goosebumps and cold sweat covering her skin, she'd take an ice-cold shower to ease her nerves, get into her work out clothes and leave her current apartment in DC to go to the Lincoln and Washington Memorial. There, she would run for a little over an hour, Steve sprinting pass her as he did his own laps. From there, Kelsey would either head back to the apartment SHIELD had put her up in or find some diner to get a quick breakfast. After that it was heading to SHIELD Headquarters to do some research or more training or go on missions.
But on those rare days when she was not busy with work, she spent them going through the many, many museums in the area or using her SHIELD privileges to access the Library of Congress and the National Archives Building. Diving head first into the primary sources and firsthand accounts in iconic moments through history.
But the name was stuck in her head. It had been months since she and Steve had moved down to Washington D.C. to be near the Triskelion. Well Kelsey only lived there part of the time. She'd alternate living between DC and New York City every few weeks, the main reason she'd do so is mainly to help Steve as much as she could with living in the twenty-first century.
Fury had been the one to make the suggestion of her moving down to DC when Steve did, giving him a familiar face well besides Natasha.
DC was a place that breathed history. And whenever she was able she'd drag Steve along and if she could get Natasha it was even better.
Otherwise Kelsey's time was devoted to aiding Steve in the modern world. She gave him some history lessons about what happened during his time in the ice and after that came the culture through the decades. Which meant hours of iconic movies and music to go through. It was all very fun.
But sadly history of course has his dark moments.
The times which everyone would rather forget or erase from history.
The wars, the fights for basic rights and the horrible injustices.
But the worse for her had to be the aftermath of World War Two, the massacre of all the innocents.
She didn't want to tell him about it, she'd actually tried to avoid it in all honesty but he found out. And when she explained everything the look he gave her haunted her for days on end.
