"What the hell am I getting myself into?" Kelsey could not help but ask herself that same question as she got off the helicopter onto what looked like an aircraft carrier. She knew it wasn't but it still looked insane as hell.
"A lot." Steve said patting her shoulder jokingly as he led the way across the aircraft carrier's surface.
The whole place felt like a shock to the system. Men and women in full black uniforms with the SHIELD insignia on their shoulders were running around doing hundreds of different things.
"Welcome to SHIELD's helicarrier." Natasha said nudging Kelsey to follow after Steve. She stumbled forward tripping over her own feet before continuing to walk forward saving herself.
Crossing the width of the monstrosity, Steve held open a door which led to the inside of the boat with a staircase to go down inside of it. The anxiety quickly set in but closing tight her fist she did her best to show a brave face.
Following after Steve as he went inside Kelsey did her best to stay right behind him but her eyes glued to the ground in a sorry attempt to block out the stares she knew she was getting. She looked exceptionally plain and normally she wanted to so she could blend into the crowd and disappear in a moments notice. But it's not like she could do that here, in trying to look ordinary she stuck out like a sore thumb it made her heart pound in anxiety.
She was so used to hiding and being out of the spotlight, being here did not feel right. Biting back on an involuntary yawn Kelsey looked up as they crossed through a threshold. They were in a huge command center with a table ahead of them and below where they were standing were dozens of agents on working on monitors.
Standing at the edge of the raised platform stood the all to familiar black leather wearing man, she had encountered dozens of times before.
"Director Fury." Natasha called making the darker skinned man turn around to reveal himself as the eye patch wearing director of SHIELD, Nick Fury. Kelsey loss all sense of her surrounding as she focused on making her words strong and clear.
"It's good to know that you finally came to your senses." Fury said to her with a smile but instantly Kelsey shook her head stopping him from saying anything else.
"Wait."
"What?" Fury asked caught off guard by her expression and actions.
"I want to make something abundantly clear to you before I join."
The man turned to look at her questioning her greatly and Kelsey puffed her chest out bravely sucking in a quick breath crossed her arms.
"Fury, the only reason I am in and I will be abundantly clear about this is to keep what happened in New York from ever happening again. Not for you but for all those who lost their lives because of those aliens. All those innocent people who will never have a future because of that. I am only here to protect the innocent, not to further any private agenda your agency might have."
"Okay." Nick Fury said as Kelsey finished her little rant.
"Ookay..." Kelsey replied slowly with disbelief that he wasn't going to say anything else.
"Now that we're past that, you should probably meet the rest of the team." He said gesturing to follow him. Turning to look over her shoulder she realized Steve and Natasha were no longer there, they'd disappeared.
Kelsey followed Nick quietly but all the same very proud she had just took the stand and said it straight out. Suddenly the whole ship just lurched and Kelsey was pretty much thrown into the wall.
"What the hell was that?" Kelsey exclaimed looking up at Nick who wore a very bemused expression at her panicked expression.
'We're flying' was all he said before turning around and continuing to walk.
As Kelsey was about to question him she realized he wasn't going to stop for her question. Pulling herself up and fixed her clothes before following after the man. The walk was no more than maybe a minute or two before she and Fury arrived at a conference room.
Fury was the first one to walk into the confrence room and just as she was about to go in her ears were met with the sound of bickering. Instantly she was reminded of petulant children. Much to her surprise as she entered the room she was met with seven fully grown buff adults instead of children.
To her mild amusement, Kelsey instantly spotted Steve Rogers bickering with the Tony Stark. The man who pretty much been the catalyst that started everything announcing himself as Iron Man back in 2010. He was essentially the reason they were all here, after his damn announcement baddies had ditched their subterranean covert doings and became braver and more daring. That daringness led Kelsey to having to start fighting more publicly than she'd preferred and it's been that way for a little over two years.
Flashy, over the top, insufferable and all around cocky, he was the complete opposite of her.
No one really noticed Kelsey as she stood there awkwardly her hands fumbling with a loose strand on the cuff of her cardigan. In the room too was Natasha looking over a file on a tablet with the archer Kelsey had met a few times before with Fury. There was a ginormous man with long blonde hair looking like a beef cake laughing at Steve and Tony's argument. And there was a smaller man in the corner writing what appeared to be scientific crap. But for Kelsey it was as good doodles to her.
She had never been good at science or math. So she was really lucky when she barely finished high school and never bothered with going to college.
"Hi." She finally said quickly gaining the attention of only Natasha, who then elbowed the archer to get him to look up. Sending Nat a thankful nod, Kelsey just ran her hand through her hair the one thing that eased her frayed nerves.
"Hey!" Kelsey said again not gaining the bickering pairs attention. Rolling her eyes, Kelsey brought her fingers up to her lips and let out a loud whistle causing Steve and Mr. Stark to jump in surprise. Everyone's attention finally went towards Kelsey who was now more than ever regretting her decision of joining this so called team.
"Kelsey." Steve said with a small smile though his cheeks were painted red in sheer embarrassment.
"For those of you who have yet to meet her, this is Miss Blackburn she is joining the team."
Kelsey stood there quietly and gave a quick nod towards the people she had yet to meet.
"Welcome to the team, Miss Blackburn, I am..."
"Iron Man, yeah I know, we all know, I envy those who are ignorant of who you are."
She had cut him off quickly to keep him from trying his charm on her knowing it would be a waste of breathe on her. Natasha and the archer next to her burst out into laughter not even bothering to cover their amusement, even Steve let out a laugh too.
The first person to approach her was the giant blonde beefcake. Extending his hand out to her, Kelsey took it and squeezed as hard as she could shaking his hand.
"Hello Lady Blackburn, I am Thor of Asgard."
"Please just call me Kelsey."
Natasha walked over giving Kelsey a gentle nod as the archer followed after her staying at the super spies' side.
"Clint Barton." He said quickly as Kelsey turned to properly give him her attention.
"And that guy over there is Dr. Bruce Banner." Fury said causing the man in the purple dress shirt doing those scientific equations to finally look back up.
"Sorry, hello." Bruce said from where he was still working. Kelsey walked over to where he was standing using her fingers to hold back her hair as she took a better look at what he was doing. This gained his attention as he quickly looked up at her, giving Kelsey a small smile as she did the same.
"Are you a scientist?"
"Far from it." Kelsey said with a very audible snort.
"What do you do?"
"I own a library."
That elicited a laugh from behind them and Kelsey looked back to see Tony holding onto a chuckle like an insufferable know it all and ready to make some snotty interjection.
"If I were you Stark, I'd think about my next words very carefully."
The look she gave him certainly shut him up. Steve smiled crossing the room and resting his hand on her shoulder.
"Welcome to the Avengers Kelsey." Steve said making Kelsey laugh.
