So, it was safe to say that the first few missions back for the avengers did not go very smoothly. With each raid on the hydra bases, their opponents became more prepared, ready for the Avengers, ready to fight back tooth and nail, not stopping until the last Hydra hit the ground.
After every siege, the team was exhausted, usually there were a few bumps and bruises but nothing major.
Unfortunately, it was with their fourth raid on a hydra base, things went wrong, gravely wrong.
Like the other past raids, each Avenger had an assignment during the mission. This base was different, many field agents for shield whose cover had been blown during the DC had gone missing and their last known locations were centered around the base. The goal was to find the agents and any other prisoners and get them out of the base.
That was up to Steve and Nat. Tony and Bruce were going to attempt to hack into the base's system to find any other remaining bases, while Bruce was in the safety of the quinjet away from the action as the team wanted to try having Banner to back up Tony instead of resorting to using the Hulk to draw fire. Which left Clint, Kelsey and Thor to deal with the main forces and keep them away from the others.
The mission at first seemed to be going rather well, they managed to get past the bases' exterior defenses with ease. But just as the groups started to split up everything changed...
Suddenly waves of Hydra soldiers appeared seemingly from nowhere, heavily armed and moving fast. They were ready for the Avengers and quickly fought back with a fury.
"Progress report guys!" Kelsey called into her communication device as she ducked behind a corner, to escape the fury of gun fire that had been following her. Clint was on the other side of the hallway sending her an exhausted look before leaning around the bend and shooting an arrow at the oncoming agents, and causing an explosion.
"No sign of any agents just yet." Natasha answered after a moment an explosion going off in the background. Kelsey looked up to Clint and he nodded to her, looking down at the tracking device on his wrist before running down the hallway to go aid Steve and Nat in their search.
"We're trying to get through the computers but something keeps blocking us." Bruce said next, his voice full of something that Kelsey couldn't place.
"These midguardians are possing some difficulty but the battle is good." Thor answered last and Kelsey had to resist rolling her eyes.
"There they are!" A man shouted causing Kelsey to whip around spotting another squadron now right in front of her. In an instant she felt bullets hit the cement wall besides her as she dived to the ground, Clint had ducked past a corner just in time disappearing from sight only seconds before. Kelsey quickly looked up to the soldiers throwing one hand up and causing the ground to shake before the ceiling collapsed between her and the soldiers.
Pulling herself off the ground, Kelsey couldn't help but pant as a piercing knife like pain reverberated through her head.
"Kels, was that you? Are you okay, do you need back up?" Steve's voice echoed in her ear. She shifted her body feeling her left ankle sting, she'd landed on it wrong when she'd dived out of the way of bullets.
"Yes Cap, it was. I'm fine."
Liar.
"Are you sure?" His voice called almost knowingly.
"Shut up!" Kelsey hissed to herself only to groan when she heard Steve apologize seconds later. Again, another wave of hydra men and women appeared raising their weapons to fire at her.
