"Ahmadu you have made a great sacrifice, I respect you for that. You are now a man with a man's burdens on your shoulder. Since the day you got wed, your responsibilities have increased. You now have somebody's daughter under your care," Abba spoke.

It is not an easy task, but it is your responsibility and you have never failed me," Abba said pausing to take a long look at me. He was poised on the three sitter like a king on his throne. His fingers had been intertwined in front of him - Abba's signature pose.

"In the past, I have entrusted my business to you but now I have entrusted a daughter to you. Do not disappoint me!" Abba cautioned with his usual calm demeanor.

"In shaa Allah, I will be a good husband."

I had no Idea how I was going to be a 'good husband' but I had never been one to exchange words with my father. I could not afford to disappoint him yet I was feeling ambivalent. I had never been in such a difficult position before. I had dealt with rugged business men and delivered on complex deals in toxic business settings. I had taken calculated risks under pressure but none of that compared to the dilemma I was in.

"May Allah make it easy for you!"

"Ameen."

"You may think I am putting you second but that is not the case. Ahmadu your wife is young and vulnerable. She is incognizant of the life we live. The kind of innocence that suffers in our world. This is why I am putting more pressure on you but should there be problems, do let me know. I will take care of it!"

My father gives the best speeches; short and impeccable. Abba's praises were always accompanied by warnings. His scolding were accompanied by affirmation of his love. It was all perfectly intertwined.
One thing was crystal clear though. Abba was not going to let me hurt the poor child -not that I would dare. The allegiance had meant more to him than I knew. Abba's love and loyalty for his childhood friend could melt hearts.
