A distant sound forced Rukkayya back in to consciousness. She reached for the device with heavy eye lids. She struggled to focus on the screen, the name she caught glimpse of on the screen made the sleep disappear.
"Hello."
"Hello, Rukkayya this is Hashim speaking, Nana just went in to labour, she asked me to inform you but please don't inform Mummy just yet. "
She barely heard the last part of what he said before she jumped up and slipped out of her night dress.
Less than 24 hours earlier..
Nana kept walking around the room in slow measured steps. She was evidently full and round by then. Her once slim feet had doubled in size.
"Sannu Sister Nana, it must really hurt, " Zuwaira comments.
"You're five seconds away from knowing," Nana responds. She stopped walking and settled on the bed using an arm for support before sitting. "Your friend here is an exception, something about the element of surprise." Nana added making air quotes.
"She is just very private Sis, she could be carrying already. I mean take a look at her, she surely looks fairer and I could swear she looks fuller too," Zuwaira clears her throat to emphasize her exaggeration.
"Wait what? I'm not! How can one be pregnant and not know it? That can't be possible," Rukkayya trails away.
The two ladies exchange a series of silent mumbles that leaves her cheeks burning.
Four hours later, Rukkayya's heart felt full as she cradled the tiny infant. She kept her eyes fixed on the new born total awe of the new born as if she was trying to memorize all her features. The infant slept peacefully with no care. Of a sudden she wanted to experience every single part of the journey that would lead to her holding an infant in her arms once more.
From the moment Nana safely delivered her bouncing baby girl at about 4:00am. Rukkayya became very busy, from helping Nana to settle in with her new baby to helping Zuwaira do the last minute shopping for her fast approaching wedding ceremony. The two caped it up with a visit to the beauty lounge for Zuwaira's final beauty season.
It was a nice and cosy parlour in the heart of Minna. There were a total of eight rooms that could accommodate two people depending on the customers choice. On Zuwaira's persistence, Rukkayya had no choice but to oblige.
