Jay

I picked up an empty beer bottle off the table and began to pick at the label absentmindedly.

"He won't get back together with him," Sophie said.

I shrugged. "It's up to him who he dates."

Sophie looked at me, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"So you're telling me, you don't mind if he dates Kyle again?"

"Why should I?" I replied.

Sophie laughed. "Because he should be dating you, that's why!"

"It's never going to happen," I said shaking my head.

"Why not?" she practically shouted at me. "He likes you, you like him, so what's the problem?"

"I don't know," I replied, "too much water under the bridge I guess."

"Uurrggghh! You boys frustrate the crap out of me sometimes."

"Hey I got you another drink Jay," Adam said suddenly appearing at the table.

"You didn't need to do that." I said, but I took it off him and smiled not to be rude.

"That's ok, I saw Alex drank most of your last one. Is he not drinking alcohol tonight?"

"Er, no, he's driving," I said, feeling that usual feeling of guilt I had when others had to change their usual behaviour because of me.

I saw a look of something flash across Adam's face.

"You should just get a taxi," he said. "I'll go see if Alex wants a proper drink."

And with that he disappeared.

"Don't mind him," Sophie said, and I quickly released the frown on my forehead.

I was about to reply when I saw Alex heading our way. I was pleased to see that Kyle was nowhere to be seen.

Sophie turned to look at him then said, "Adam's looking for you. He wants to buy you a 'proper drink'". She used her fingers to mark the speech quotes.

Alex frowned then plonked himself down on my knee.

"There's no need, I'm sharing Jay's tonight," he said with a grin before grabbing my drink and downing half of it again.

I shook my head at him but smiled. I had to fight the urge to throw my hands around his waist.

Sophie looked at me and winked, making my face flush slightly.

"So, what happened with Kyle?" Sophie asked.

Alex's body slumped as he sighed.

"He mentioned that text I sent."

Sophie laughed. "Oh no, what did it say again?"

"That I missed him," Alex replied quietly.

I felt my body tense at the thought of him missing Kyle. I knew I needed to prepare myself for the two of them getting back together.

"That's right!" said Sophie, still clearly very amused. "And what was it you were supposed to send?"

That caught my full attention, but Alex didn't answer. I'm guessing he must have pulled a face at Sophie as she just laughed even harder.

I couldn't help it now. I was intrigued.

"What do you mean? What was it supposed to say?"

I couldn't get my head round how you could change a text to say you were missing someone by mistake.
