❝ and the battle rages on ❞

FEELINGS. THEY always fought with each other in her mind. It was always a constant battle that she never could win, even if she tried which she never did. What was the point anyway? And besides, the only thing that kept her going was the thought that she'd see Jerome again. Even if it was a fantasy.

The two feelings that were at war the next morning were sadness (no surprise) and anger. Jim had left early that morning after getting a call from Harvey saying that he had a lead on the Wayne case. So Skylar was left at home with Barbara and the mother had decided to attempt to make breakfast.

Skylar didn't know if she should be upset that her dad didn't take her with him on the case or if she should accept it and move on. The latter won, though her feelings still battled with each other in the never-ending war.

Barbara set the plates on the table and pulled out her chair, sitting down across from her daughter. Skylar dug into her bagel and smiled at her mom with a teasing grin. "Congrats, mom. You didn't burn it this time."

In response, Barbara smiled back, laughing. "Can you believe it?" She took a bite of the bacon. "I'm getting better."

Skylar laughed. It was easy at times for everything to just disappear. And those times were moments like these. The times where she could just sit back and spend a quality day with her parents. Jim and Barbara were the only people she had. Skylar didn't have friends or anyone else besides them. And she tried to tell herself that that was enough.

"Ok so, girls day?" Barbara asked, looking hopeful which made Skylar feel guilty for denying it.

But it wasn't like Barbara meant to make her feel guilty or upset; because she didn't. She was just concerned for her daughter. And the blonde wanted Skylar to know that she wasn't alone if even she felt like she was. The world was cruel and dark and Barbara was afraid that her daughter would never see the light.

"Depends on what you want to do."

Her mother made a face as she thought. And then as if she suddenly got an idea, she looked back at her. The smile on her face never wavered. "Nope. We are going to do whatever you want to do."

Skylar was speechless as she tried to form words but found it hard. "What I want?" Jim and Barbara nearly always gave Skylar what she wanted. It didn't matter what it was or the price, they made it work because of the slightest bit of hope-filled them. They thought that Skylar would finally be happy again if they did so.
