America's POV
I wake up and I have a back cramp. I look around the room. There was a bed by a window two nightstands on either side. There was marble flooring and a metal tray that was suppose to hold food. I looked back at the bed. Kamber was laying there. Still. All the memories came flooding back into my mind. Kamber. Cancer. I look across the bed to see an empty chair. Maxon. That's where he was suppose to be. Where was he? Right, back to Kamber. I got up and towered over her. Still no movement. Please Kamber wake up. Please. When I was like that for about a minute or two more I finally had to know. I shook her. To my relieve she woke up with a jolt.
"Mer. What the heck?" Kamber said sleepily and rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand.
"I thought you were-"
"Cancer doesn't work like that. Cancer is a slow and painful journey that could end up happy or sad." Kamber stated. She wasn't herself. She wasn't the Kamber I saw and heard last night. This Kamber wasn't seizing up her time. This Kamber spent her time dwelling on the past when she should be thinking about the future. The door opened with a squeak and in came in the one and only Prince Maxon. Maxon held a tray of food. The tray was identical to the one on Kamber's right nightstand. Maxon put the tray down on Kamber's left nightstand. We were all so tired we didn't feel like talking I guess. So we all moved around. Maxon and I helping Kamber get comfortable and settled. I went off in the corner to stretch. I cracked my back and knuckles. It felt so good to just move and twist and turn.
"You can stay of course" Maxon said which took me by surprise. I looked up and saw Maxon and Kamber's eyes on me.
"Huh?" I asked.
"Since Kamber is here and your her best friend. She probably would want you here. Right?" He looked at Kamber.
"Oh yes indeed!!" Kamber said clapping her hands like she was five and found out how to stack blocks.
I looked down. I didn't know what to say. Stay at the palace or go home? I needed to stay here. Till Aspen came and I claimed him and I confess my love to him. When he finally opens his eyes to see that we were meant to be. "I'll need to think about it." I said trying not to sound too excited or desperate.
"Oh. Okay." Maxon said and looked down.
"America why wouldn't you stay with me?" Kamber asked to sounded hurt.
"I never said no. You guys are just guessing my answer that's not the final answer." I said and shrugged.
"Okay. I guess I'll just have to fight on my own." Kamber said.
"That's not what I meant Kamber. You know that." I said. I was hurt that she would think that. I would never let her fight this disease on her own."Excuse me your highness and Lady America." The Lady Doctor we saw yesterday came in. I looked at Maxon, his face had a puzzled look to it. Like he was trying to think about something, remember something in his past. I look at the doctor again, she was looking at me. "I will need you two to leave while Lady Kamber gets some sleep."
"Oh of course." I said and walk over to Maxon and took his arm gently. He looked back at Kamber and waved and looked back at the doctor in confusion."What was that back there?" I asked pointing to the hospital wing behind us.
"What was what?" Maxon asked when I knew he knew what I was talking about.
"The doctor. You were looking at her weirdly. Why?"
"I don't want to talk about it right now." He snapped.
I took a step back unwinding my arm from his. He looked me in the eye. His eyes were cold. Almost daring me to question him. Good thing for him. I didn't.
"Umm... I got to go." I said awkwardly and walked back a few paces and turned towards my room. Maxon went his separate way, probably to his office.I got lost to my room again and I was basically just walking in and out of hallways.
"I love you!! We could run away. We could change our identities and make a run for it." A males voice said on the other side of the corner.
"No. You know how much trouble we could get in if THEY they found out about...about us??" A females voice asked.
"I would never let them hurt you. I promise."
"You can't say that. They would hurt you. Chain you up from coming for me and I would get hurt. I love you too. But it won't work out. I'm a selected. You're a guard. I'm suppose to be loyal to his highness."
I cleared my throat. "Excuse me?" I asked more than stated.
"Oh my word. How much did you here?" The girl questioned me.
"Umm about three last two minutes or so."
"So you know?"
"I-Yes"
"Please don't tell anyone. I promise I'll make it up to you!!"
"I'll keep your secret. I don't need anything to bribe me." I said shocked about how much this girl wanted to keep her secret.
"Really?! That would be great. Wait- you're America. America Singer. Right??" The girl asked her voice rising up to a cheerful level.
"Yeah. I guess I am." I said rubbing my elbow.
"You're Kamber's best friend. Kamber is close to Maxon. We all know it. Which must mean you are too!!" She said her cheerfulness gone and pointed a finger at me. "How do I not know that you aren't going to tell him about me and Carter when it could help your friend win the selection and have me and Carter banished to an providence as eights?" She accused.
"Marlee. Honey. Calm down. I'm sure we can talk to the girl. Not accuse. Talk to her and we can come to some sort of arrangement. Can't we?" The guards name who I guess is Carter said and looked at me. I nodded I was too afraid to talk because of the girl who's name is Marlee to yell at me again.
"We should maybe talk about this somewhere else. Follow me." Carter said and led the way.Ahhh this is getting so good! Remember to comment and please like! What do you think America will say?
