This time Jacqueline and her friends were at lunch, silently eating their food.
Their table was not on the far corner, but it was not in the middle of the school cafeteria either.
They didn't want to draw much attention.
There, there were no mean girls, no bad-boys, no cheerleaders, no nerds, no nothing. Just the four of them.
And that was the key to stay out of school drama.
Don was thinking about the dates, the girls had the other night. He was troubled.
To be specific, he cared about a certain date more.
He was starting to have feelings for Jacqueline, and he couldn't deny it any longer. His best friend since first grade, was now also his crush.
Jacqueline, was troubled too, though.
But not for the same reason. She was thinking Mark's kiss.
That kiss, was killing her from the inside-out.
It has been four days since it happened.
Jacqueline and Mark went on more dates and kissed more times.
Elaine and Douglas went to even more dates. Kissed even more times.
They even saw Jack sometimes. The drunk guy they first met at Ibiza.
He turned out to be a very nice guy, and one of Douglas' closest friends.
It felt kind of scary and complicated at the same time, for all four of them.
Elaine was enjoying the opportunity she was given, to the fullest.
She loved the attention she was getting from everyone. Douglas, her friends, Tim. And that felt amazing.
She was so stupid, that she actually thought someone like Douglas could be so kind and such a gentleman. She thought Douglas could give her anything she ever wanted. That he was the one. That they shared something special.
But that girl was thinking too much.
"Prom's close." Elaine said breaking the comfortable silence.
"Did you ask Douglas yet?" Jacqueline asked.
"I'll text him, now." she took her phone and started writing a text message.
'Care to join me to my school's prom on Friday?'
Sent 12:23
'Pick you up around 7 on Friday night, then?'
Sent 12:25
'Perfect'
Sent 12:27
"He's coming!" she immediately squealed.
But she didn't know that, that was what Douglas was waiting for. It was the perfect opportunity for him.
Tim rolled his eyes. He was getting sick and tired of all this. "Oh, that's so amazing." he said ironically, before Jacqueline could talk.
"Shut up!" Don shushed him. "That's great Elaine." he gave her a small smile.
"I'm so happy for you!" Jacqueline cooed.
~
They all felt so happy now, thinking that it could stay this way for long.
But things never stay amazing for too long, life always finds it's way to get back at you.
Every one of them thought that this could work, each of them for a different reason.
Jacqueline was thinking about her and Mark's kind of relationship. She was wondering if it was going to work. Was Mark the guy she needed?
Don was daydreaming about him and Jacqueline being together. He deep down always knew that he loved her, but was denying it, up until now.
Elaine was thinking that him and Douglas were going to last forever. That she had found her prince charming, and she was happy.
Tim on the other hand, was pessimistic as always. But that wasn't always a bad thing, you can't see everything from the bright side.
He was thinking that Mark was bad for Jacqueline, and that they shouldn't be together because he knew that deep down both Don and Jacqueline needed each other.
He was also wondering if Don was actually sad, because he seemed so and that Douglas was a creep and bad for Elaine.
But in the end, maybe the pessimists are the only people who can see the bad things and help you prevent them, stop them or protect you from them.
~
They prom was coming very soon and the girls needed to go shopping to pick their prom dresses.
"So what do you think about this one?" Elaine asked her best friend getting out of the dressing room with a very hot red dress.
The fourth one for today.
"I don't know, Elaine." Jacqueline replied "I think it is too hot for just a prom. I mean it isn't anything important after all."
"You're right, you're right." Elaine answered and looked at herself again "let me just put on the last one."
She got back into the dressing room and after a couple of minutes came out wearing a black dress, pretty short but not too revealing like the previous one.
"How about this one huh?" she asked and posed for Jacqueline to see the dress properly.
"Yes!This is the one! I love this." Jacqueline smiled to her best friend, laughing.
"Let's go pay for this baby then!"she giggled.
"Now shall we go to get you a dress?"
"I guess." Jacqueline answered.
After going to a bunch of stores, they started giving up since no dress seemed perfect for Jacqueline.
"I don't know El." she said "I don't really like any of these dresses."
"Come on try this and I'm going to find some more for you." Elaine replied and left quickly to find the perfect dress for her best friend's special night.
After putting on a couple of more dresses, Jacqueline had only one more left.
"Wait, I think I found the one." Jacqueline said "Let me put it on."
She wore it and got out, looking amazing. It was a deep blue color that was quite short but not too revealing.
Perfect for Jacqueline, and absolutely stunning.
After buying that one too they left the mall excited for Friday's prom.
Everything was going great and seemed amazing, but was it?
