~Chapter 11~
Max texted me to meet him outside the school. I don't think it's the best idea, but if he insists. After school I quickly gathered up my stuff and hurried out to meet him. The last thing we need is for someone to spot Max and draw attention to him.
I spotted him on a bench outside the school. "Hey Mary," he said, lowering his aviator sunglasses to look at me.
"I swear you don't leave the house without those!" I laughed and pointed to his glasses as he pushed them back into place. "What should I do with my bike?" I gestured to it, chained to the bike stand.
"Leave it, we're walking." He stood up and grabbed my books and my bags from me. He walked over to a black car that was parked on the other side of the street. He placed my stuff inside then came back to join me. I gave him a questioning look. "Just in case we need to make a quick get away. My driver's gonna be circling the area where we are heading."
"You think of everything don't you?" I asked. He gave me a nod and a big smile in reply. "So where exactly are we heading?"
"Starbucks, 3 blocks down," he answered. I nodded back. We walked in silence until we were away from the flow of students, wanting to draw as little attention to us as we could. I looked at him. He was wearing beat up black jeans, a black and red plaid button up shirt over a grey v-neck, a black fedora, and sneakers. Last but not least, his ukulele was strung over his back.
"You don't go anywhere without that thing do you?" I laughed.
"It's my most prised possession," he replied. He makes messy and laid back look good. I probably look horrible compared to him. I was wearing a black mid sleeve shirt, dark blue skinny jeans, and my black boots. Of course, on my head I was wearing a red hat. This time I didn't tuck my hair into it, and my hair was flowing in blonde waves.
"So how was school?" he asked.
"Horrible," I sighed.
"Yeah, my publicist and managers weren't too pleased. Neither is Nickelodeon. The big boss isn't thrilled when there are rumors flying about his stars," he stuck his hands in his back pockets and looked down at his feet.
"I'm sorry Max, it must be a thousand times worse for you than it is for me."
"Actually. It's equally bad for both us. I am technically not aloud to be with you."
"What?" I really hoped he was kidding. But this isn't something to kid about.
"Yeah, they think I'm sightseeing right now. They have no clue where I really am."
"Oh Max. I- I don't even know what to say about that," I stopped walking right then and threw my arms around Max in a big hug. He returned the hug. "Neither do I, Mary. Neither do I."
He grabbed my hand and we continued to walk. I wonder what we look like when we are together. We must really look like a couple. But we aren't, we're just friends. This is how it always was when we were younger. We would walk around holding hands all the time, it just seemed so natural.
Soon we reached the coffee shop. Before I entered I looked behind us. I had the feeling we were being watched. I saw Max's driver circling the area. I just figured that's what the feeling was.
After we got our coffee and sat down, Max took off his sunglasses and began to talk. "So what are we gonna do about this? About us?"
"They don't have to know we are together do they?" My thirst was suddenly gone and I just sat there staring down at my cup.
