Chapter 23 - Bad News

FLASHBACK:

"That's why you are a risk. You can't even go take a walk in the beach without someone following you."

I finally reach the crosswalk, I looked both sides of the road. No car. I looked back again and saw no one. I instictively cross the road.

Suddenly, I saw lights and heard squealing tires along with a horn. I felt something touching me and heard something breaking.

I fell to the ground unable to move,having a bad time to breathe and coughing up blood. I entered in shock from the sudden sharp pain I was feeling. Then I saw everything turn black.

"What the bloody hell is happening?Why me?"

CURRENTLY:

DAMIEN'S POV:

 I was at home, drinking some scotch in the couch, thinking about nothing, when Dianna called me. Me and Dianna weren't very close, altough we know each other for a long time, we never deepened our friendship, we never had the chance to do that. She almost never calls me. Weird.

-Well, hello m... - She interrupted me really worried.

- Damien, she's in the hospital. 

-Wait. Who is in the hospital? - I asked confused, the scotch made my brain process things a lot slower than usual.

-Jade - She whimpered while saying her name.

-What? What happened?How bad? - I asked once again. Getting really worried and shocked. What the bloody hell happened to my gi.... Jade?

-She was hit by a car. She's is in really bad shape. Come quick, please.

-Yes, of course, I am on my way. - I said and ended the phone call

I had to call Nick. I may be jealous over him and Jade but, he has the right to know. I called Nick while I tightened the laces of my shoes.

«BEEP... BEEP... BEEP» You better answer your phone, dickhead.

-Hello Damien, to what do I owe the pleasure of your call? - He asked rhetorically and with irony on his accent.

-I'm not in the mood for playing games right now.

-You were always such a cranky person.. Is your life not going too well?

-Jade is in the hospital - I finally said- and it's not looking too good for her.

- What? What happened?! - His tone of voice got a bit higher. I almost could see him in shock.

-She was hit by a car, I'm on my way to the hospital right now.

-Me too.

AT THE HOSPITAL:

I arrived at the hospital and searched for Dianna. I quickly found her, she was sitting on the floor right next to Jade's room. Her head was down. I walked towards her.

-Are you okay? - I asked worried, I think I've never been so scared in my life as today.

-No, she's.. she's in coma. The doctor said she might not wake up - her voice started shaking, I got down and patted her of the back, trying to give her some confort - even if she wakes up there is a good chance of being with amnesia.

-She's a fighter, she's going to make it. - I said trying to convince myself and her - Can I see her?

-Yeah,sure - Dianna replied.

I tried to prepare myself, but failed. I entered the room and looked to her. She was attached to several machines. I pulled a chair next to her and sat down next to her.

 - Hey, Jade probably you aren't listening, but I just wanted to tell you that I will find the bastard who did this to you and I will make sure he suffers. Everything is going to be okay.

I saw someone standing at the door from the corner of my eye and turned to them.

-Nick.

-Damien. How is she? - He asked without a hint of humor on his face.

-She's in coma. Doctors said it's unlikely she wakes up, and even if that happens, she may have amnesia.

-Do you know who did this to her?

-No, but I will found out and he better prepares himself for what I'm going to do to him. - I said firmely.

Suddenly Dianna walks in shouting at Nick.

-What the bloody hell are you doing here?! You're the reason why she's in a coma! You are the reason she's in danger! - She yelled at him, really angry and frustated.

I couldn't say I wasn't enjoying the sight of someone cursing names at Nick, but maybe this was not the best time to do it.

- Dianna calm down, this is not the best time to throw the blame at someone. We have to stick together right now.

She took a long deep breath before speaking.

-You are right Damien. I need to go outside calm down.

She left the room quickly and Nick was looking at me with a weird look on his face.

- Well played mate. But she is right about me. I'm the one to blame if I had really died that day, Jade wasn't in this crappy situation - He spoke with his head down, blaming himself.

-Don't do this to yourself. It's not your fault. You didn't hit her. This mask of the victim doesn't suits you well, mate. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Be a man. She's the only victim here. We should be tracking who did this to her. - I told him, also scolding him.

-I'm going to go, I'm clearly not very welcome here. I'm going to track down the person who did this to her. If I find out something I will tell you. - He said leaving.

-Okay. - I responded to him. - Hope you didn't hear this part, love - I said,this time to Jade.

Be gentle to him. I almost could hear Jade saying to me.
