A Difference

GERARD'S POV

"I hate this I hate this I hate this I hate this" I said as I went as fast as a cripple can go to get ready for school.
"Do you need help?" Jalyn asked. She was already dressed and ready to leave.
"I can't get my freaking jeans on over the stupid cast" I whined. She grabbed a pair of scissors and my jeans.
"NO...please don't.... I really don't even need pants" I begged.
"You're wearing pants. It's not like you don't have a ton of the same jeans in your closet" she cut the ankle of the left pant leg off and handed them to me. I struggled to get them on as she put on my eyeliner for me. The best relationship is when you do each other's makeup. I thought. I looked in the mirror at my red shirt and fading orange-ish red hair. I looked down at my leg and resented it. I can't do anything for 8 weeks because I was being stupid.

We got to school via Jalyn's terrible driving.
"Shit! I forgot to fill Mouse's bowl with treats!" She said as she pulled up.
"I'm sure he'll be fine" I said hobbling out of the car. We walked toward the group and something was different. Frank had his arm around Hannah and Mikey and Ray were both tense looking.
"Where's Kaitlyn?" Jay asked looking at them all. Hannah just pointed to the other side of the common where Kaitlyn was standing with Steve Harrington. They were laughing and she was quite obviously flirting. Before I left three years ago me and Steve were friends. Then he joined the football team, stopped listening to music and left the band. He was our drummer.  He had threatened Mikey with everything under the sun after he lost his temper when Mikey opened up to him about his mental health and Steve said it was a weakness. Being the older brother I had to do something. I kicked him out with some rainbow vocabulary and we haven't talked ever since.
"What the hell is she doing with that son of a bitch?" I asked them.
"I-I dunno. She knows what he did to us" Mikey said shifting back and forth uncomfortably.

Kaitlyn came back over and out her stuff down.
"What the fuck was that?" Frank asked her getting mad.
"I was just talking. He texted me last night and asked if we could hang out so we went to a movie. He's really different now than he was then" she said.
"Bullshit" Mikey said remembering what he'd done.
"I'm keeping my trap shut. You guys know how I feel about him" I said picking my bag up and getting back over my crutches.
"C'mon guys. Maybe he's actually decent now. It's been three years man" Ray said easing the conversation.
"I support your judgement. If you say he's changed he has." Hannah said patting her on the shoulder and getting her stuff off the ground.
"I'm not a fan but I support you. All the way" Jalyn said picking up her bag and turning to me.
"Don't let this ruin your whole day. Text me if you need help. I'll see you at lunch" she said getting on her tip toes to give me a kiss and walking away.

Time skip three days later...

GERARD'S POV

"Hey. Kaitlyn texted me and asked if you me Hannah and Frank wanted to go on a date! You guys can all catch up and we can go to dinner. They wanted to go to the Golden Horseshoe for lunch today" Jalyn walked into the living room where I was sitting. She sat down next to me and smiled really big.
"I don't want to... but I guess I will" I said looking back at her.
"Thank you. Get dressed. Mikey washed your cut pants yesterday for you" she said walking upstairs.
"THANKS MIKEY" I yelled up the stairs.
"NO PROBLEM" he screamed back from his room. We got ready and met the four of them at the restaurant. We got in the elevator and got a table.

A woman walked over and took our drink orders after telling us her name. It was super awkward.
"Are you guys still in that weird band now that you're back?" Steve asked failing to make good conversation.
"Yes, Steve, we're still in that weird band" I responded coldly.
"They actually just got off tour. Their songs are on Kerrang! Sometimes too" Hannah said contributing.
"Oh yea I heard about that 'local band goes big time' " he recited the headline. He was obviously thinking he should've been in it.
"Did you guys see that video of the yodeling Walmart kid? He went to Cochella this year" Jalyn said randomly. Kaitlyn spit out her water laughing and sang like the boy.
"DaAaaAaaDYy" she sang laughing.  Steve laughed and put his hand on her back.

We ate and had our drinks. After we were all finished I was about to go down the elevator to pay the bill and pull the car upfront for Jalyn when Steve said he'd come with me. I didn't know if he was being genuine or stupid. We got on the elevator and he started conversation.
"How's Mikey? I haven't seen him in a while. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten killed with that big mouth of his" he said like a snark. Suddenly the past washed over me and my brotherly instinct was on an all time high. I grabbed him by his lettermans jacket and pinned him to the elevator wall. He looked me dead in the eyes with his ugly eyes and stupid smirk. He pushed me back and I struggled for balance on my crutches. He took a swing at me. He slammed me in the face then in the stomach. I stood on one foot and dropped my crutches I leaned forward.
"You son of a bitch" I said looking back up at him through my fallen hair. I swung back at him and slammed him the the exact place he'd hit me.
"Look. Now we match." I said. I turned to see that the elevator door was open and all of the people in the lobby were frozen in shock. I wiped the blood off my mouth and grabbed my crutches walking over to the counter. I sat the cash and the bill down and went back up the elevator to the table to see Jalyn, Hannah, Kaitlyn, and Frank.
