i hear a quiet little knock on the front door, so i slowly go down the stairs, trying not to wake up my mom. it's eleven at night, so i dressed up in all black in order to get around easier during this time.
i unlock the door and see, matt, also wearing all black, "you ready?" he says in a raspy voice, sounding like he just woke up from a nap.
i nod my head, "i'm ready." i go out the door, and secure it before we walk to his car.
we get in the car and, matt, starts driving, "what's this dudes address?"
"173 berry lane." i tell him, pointing down a street so he can turn. he turns the steering wheel with one hand, i never understood how people can drive with one hand like it's so easy. well, it's not for me anyway.
the car ride is awkward and silent, i can't help but break it, "so, how's life?" i ask randomly.
"it was going great up until a few days ago." he keeps his eyes on the road.
"why's that?" i ask interested.
"it's when i met you." he glances at me.
my eyebrows furrow, "i'm not that bad."
"you're right, you're not bad," matt pauses, "you're horrible, you're worse than the kids that try hard to talk to me."
"you're full of yourself aren't you?" i cross my arms together, waiting for his response.
"just a little."
we turn once more, and i see the little house that floods my mind with old memories. i use to come over to, wesley's, house almost every day, it feels weird to even look at it again. matt, parks across the street, as i take in deep breaths.
he puts out his hand, "give me some eggs."
i look at him confusingly, "i thought you brought them."
he sighs heavily, "are you fucking kidding me? why are you never prepared?"
"did you see me walk out with eggs in my hands? no, i don't think so!" i yell.
"and did you see me with eggs? no, i don't think so!" he mimics my voice along with my gestures.
i roll my eyes, "what are we going to do now?"
"i don't know, genius, any more bright ideas?" matt leans his head against the window.
"i mean, it's not too late, we can go to the store." i sound hopeful.
"the nearest store is half an hour away," he runs his hand through his hair tiredly, "there's no way we're going all the way down there."
this whole plan was beginning to fall apart, i really wanted this to work out.
he starts up the car engine, "i guess we're going to my house then. i got eggs there."
great, this is going to be another ten minute drive with the most amazing person ever!
yeah, right.
after another painful ten minutes in the car, we pull up to his driveway. he steps out the car, "i'll get the eggs, and don't do anything stupid. who knows what else you're capable of." he slams the car door, and runs across his lawn.
i don't know how much more i'll be able to stand him, at this point i'm ready to rip out my own hair. i sound mean, but i can assure that he feels the exact same about me too. it's fair.
after a couple minutes, i hear a deafening scream coming from matt's house. i open the car door and run across the lawn, what the hell did he do now?
i open the front door of the house, and barely see anything due to all the lights being turned off.
"who are you both?! i'm going to call the police!" i hear a woman scream.
i run around in the dark looking for a light switch, until i finally feel the switch and flip it up. my eyes adjust to the light, and all i see is matt beaten up on the floor, and a woman guarding herself with a broom.
"matt champion, what are you doing dressed up in all black and tip toeing around the house for?" the woman yells at him, and kneels down to help him up.
"mom, where did you learn how to hit like that with a broom?" matt says while he caresses his forehead from pain.
oh, this isn't good.
his mom looks up at me, "and who's this?"
"i'm a friend of his." i rush over to them both.
"what are you two doing up at this hour? it's midnight." she gives us both disapproving looks.
"she- she needed help to find her dog. it ran away an hour ago, so she came to me." he lies.
"you must be the girl next door," she smiles, "your name is everlee, correct? i've spoken to your mother before."
i nod, "i am, but i'm so sorry for the disruptions, mrs. champion. i didn't mean for all this to happen." i apologize.
"well it's alright, sweetie, but can't you ask your mother to help you?" mrs. champion asks at the same time as, matt, finally gets off from the floor.
"i would, but she just got you know..." i fail to come up with an excuse. she nods her head, waiting for me to finish my sentence.
"plastic surgery! yeah, she just got plastic surgery for her breast and it's been hard for her to get around." i lie, "i really need your sons help to find my dog, i'm just so worried for, fluffy." i pretend to wipe a tear from my eye.
she places her hand on my shoulder, "don't cry, everlee! he'll help you!"
mrs. champion, waves over matt to comfort me, "go help find her dog!" she nudges him towards me.
she pushes us out the door, "good luck, kids! oh, and sorry about beating you with a broom, matt! i love you!" then shuts the door on our faces.
"fluffy? really? that's the best name you could come up for a dog?" he says.
"what? i thought it sounded pretty cool." i shrug.
we get back inside the car, until a wave of realization hit me, "matt! the eggs! what about the eggs?" i panic.
he pulls about a dozen out of his front hoodie pocket, "they're right here," his expression shows that he's proud of himself, "i got them when you were making a scene about your imaginary dog."
i sigh in relief, "my acting skills were spot on, don't you think?"
"oh yeah definitely, you're better than angelina jolie."
