AN AWKWARD DINNER

it's been a couple weeks since, matt and i, have talked. i've waved at him in the school halls, but he just ignores me. this is torture.

i'm laying in bed with my earbuds in my ears, listening to music. until my mom unexpectedly barges into my room, "everlee! help me cook dinner, we're having guests over!" she pants.

i sit up, "who is it?"

"mrs. champion and her son!" she says excitedly.

oh, god.

i nod, "i'll be down there in a second."

she smiles while closing my door, and i hear her rush down the stairs. i pull myself out of bed, and trudge down the stairs. i'm trying to at least mentally prepare myself for tonight. it's definitely going to be awkward.

-

after an hour, mom and i, finally finish cooking up dinner. she told me to head up to my room, so i can change into a new outfit for tonight. after i finished up, i go down to the kitchen and help her set up the table.

mom, passes me a plate to place on the table, "so, what got you to invite them over?" i ask.

she shrugs, "i went to go get the mail outside, and so was mrs. champion, then we started to talk a bit, so i invited her over."

all of sudden, there's a knock on the door. mom, rushes to it and welcomes, mrs. champion, and matt in. as always, he looks irritated as ever. he looks like begged his mom to stay home.

after we all greeted each other, i helped mom serve everyone their plate of food, before we all finally sat down together. everyone digs into their food except for, matt, since he kept picking at it.

but then came the questions.

"so, matt, how's school going?" my mom forces a conversation.

"alright." he doesn't look up, and keeps his eyes on his plate.

his mom nudges him on the shoulder to be more active in the conversation. his head perks up, and he pretends to care about what's going on.

"school is going great!" he fakes an enthusiastic tone and smile.

his mom rolls her eyes, and glares at him for his response, "except for the time he spent one thousand dollars on a school event."

"it was for a good cause, mom." his face turns red, "i mean it was for a good cause, but i regret doing it."

she ignores him, "what about you, everlee?" how's school?" she asks.

i open my mouth, ready to tell her about how school has been, until of course, i have to get interrupted before i even get a word out.

"anyone need the salt?" matt, waves the salt shaker in the air.

mrs. champion looks at him annoyed, but continues on, "are you excited for that senior trip this week?" she smiles, expecting for me to explode with excitement, but really everyone couldn't give a shit about this trip.

i nod, "couldn't be anymore excited." i force a smile.

"so, who made this?" matt asks, while observing his plate.

"i did." i say, afraid of why he asked.

"no wonder it's so bad." he mutters under his breath.

mom, gets up from her seat, awkwardly, "i'll be back, i'm gonna use the restroom." she has a weak smile. she knows this isn't going well.

once she disappears around the corner, mrs. champion, faces the both of us, "are you two still not on good terms?"

"he's the one who doesn't want to be on good terms." i point at, matt.

he shrugs, "so what?"

she rolls her eyes at him, "if you two don't make up then i'm gonna have to intervene."

"come on, mom, don't do this." matt, sounds irritated.

she crosses her arms, "i don't know what happened between you two, but i know it probably isn't worth losing a friendship."

"then what are you planning?" he asks.

"if you two don't work things out on your own, then i'll force it." she smirks.

matt groans, "that's not how it works, you can't just force us to be friends again."

mrs. champion giggles, "watch me."

"i agree with him, i don't think you can just force us." i say.

"well then, are you both gonna work together and fix the problem?" her eyebrows raise.

"most likely not," matt blurts, "but i'm fine with that."

she sighs, "i'm not gonna let you be fine with that. after your senior trip, we're gonna fix this whether you both like it or not."

man, i already sense the trouble.
