"matt, don't even move." i order him to hold the ladder still as i paint some stars on my ceiling. we just got back from the store and bought some glow in the dark paint.
"girl, come on, i got you," he keeps a hand on each side of the ladder, "i won't let you fall."
i dip a brush into a plastic dish that we filled up with the substance, and begin to carefully draw stars on the ceiling. i finish off the first one and take a look at it, "what do you think?" i ask for matt's approval.
he looks up, "not bad."
i paint a few more from different sizes and styles. matt wants to also try it out, so we switch spots. i hold the ladder for him while he climbs enough steps to reach the top. he dips the brush into the paint and moves it around smoothly. he draws little clouds, moons, stars, and little swirls creating movement for the clouds.
"who knew that you were such an artist?" i chuckle and he does the same.
at this point, it's pretty late at night and matt still hasn't slept since yesterday. i notice that he yawns a couple times and tell him it's fine if he wants to head home, but he keeps refusing to. he really wants to stay.
he climbs down the ladder and moves it to a different spot, "here." he hands me the paint and brush. i go up the ladder again and repeat the same process.
we do this for another hour and we finally get my whole ceiling done. he turns off the lights, and all is left to see is the crooked and neon doodles. we lay on my bed together and admire what we've done.
"i didn't think we'd do that well, i mean look at this." he looks at me proudly, causing me to smile.
"i like the one you did there." he points at a star that i painted and points out its uneven sides.
i softly laugh, "shut up."
we lay there for a while, talking about every single mark we made on the ceiling. "hey, can i just say something?" matt asks. he sounds kinda nervous.
"go ahead."
"well, i don't know if this is too soon to say but i feel like i need to tell you this," since my head lays on his chest, i can hear and feel his heartbeat beating faster and faster by every word, "but i want you to know that i love you."
it takes me a moment to process what he said. i had an idea that he was going to say that, but the fact that he actually did makes me speechless.
"a lot actually," he doesn't sound nervous anymore, he sounds more confident, "you just make me so fucking happy, literally every time i see you i just wanna do ten backflips in a row. hell, i just wanna be with you forever."
"and of course you don't have to say it back now, but i just want you to know that i love you more than you can ever imagine. i'm here for you, always and forever." he says lastly before kissing my forehead.
"you really mean all that?"
he nods, "of course i do. i mean every single part of it."
i smile, "i love you too, matt."
it might be too soon to even bring up the thought of loving each other, but i know that we both know it feels right.
