today is the day of the senior trip. it's six in the morning, and the whole grade is standing outside of the school, waiting for the charter bus that we rented out to come by and pick us up.
ian and i, are sitting on our suitcases. i yawn, "ian, how bad do you think this is going to be?"
he shrugs, "very," he turns his head to look over at me, then he changes the subject, "how are things between you and matt?"
i purse my lips, "he still hates me."
"what about the time he came over for dinner?" he grins.
"it ended up with his mom being determined to make us be friends again." i tell him.
he smacks my shoulder, "you see? everyone wants you guys to make up already! even his mom!"
we both hear the bus pull up, and everyone starts to gather up their suitcases. the driver comes out, and starts to individually help everyone put their luggage inside these compartments. once everyone gets settled inside the bus, and is sitting in a seat, ian and i talk even more.
"i swear to god, if you plan something for matt and i-" i start, but he interrupts me.
"who said i'm going to plan something?" he smirks.
"the look on your face says otherwise."
"so what if i do plan something?" he shrugs, and crosses his arms.
i giggle, "i'll hit you with a fucking brick if you do."
"it'll be worth it." he mutters.
-
"welcome, kids! are you all excited as i am today?" a guy in a red collared shirt, and khaki cargo shorts asked us. no one makes a sound.
we all just got off the bus with our suitcases, and right as the bus drove off, this guy greets us happily.
"well, my name is josh, and i'm going to be your host for this trip," he scans the crowd, "where's the teacher?"
our teacher makes her way to the front, and stands right next to him.
"can you please make them get into groups of three? the first activity is just having them explore around the woods and cabins. you know, just for them to have an idea where everything is." josh, explains to her.
she nods, and pulls out a clipboard from her bag. she continues, "alright kids, we're about to get into groups of three, so listen for your name!" she yells out as, josh, stands over her shoulder.
"everlee, wesley, and ian!" our teacher unexpectedly calls out our names first. ian and i, look at each other in shock.
i haven't talked to wesley in a month, and today isn't going to be the day we do.
after a while, she finally finishes, and she steps back to let josh go back to being in charge.
until, matt, slowly raises his hand, "you didn't put me in a group."
our teacher stares at her clipboard, confused, "seems like i forgot about you," she sighs, "can anyone volunteer to have, matt, in their group?"
ian's arm shoots up, "we will! we'd love to have him be with us!" he smiles.
i smack his arm, "what the hell do you think you're doing? you know this isn't going to end well." i lean in, whispering aggressively.
he shrugs, "this will give you both some time to talk. this is a good thing."
"but wesley is in our group too. this is all just going to be fucking awkward." i remind him.
his eyebrows furrow, "fuck, you're right." he looks defeated.
"can't i join a different one?" matt asks.
our teacher shakes her head, and points over at ian, "no, you're joining ian's group."
great. this is great.
