it's now passing period, and halls are packed with students rushing to their next classes. i struggle to get through a cluster of boys who won't move, until i realize it's matt's friends.
dom chuckles, "what's the rush, everlee?"
i really like the boys, they're how i would want my brothers to be if i ever did have any.
i stop to talk to the boys, "oh, hey guys!" i say happily, i feel really comfortable around them.
"hey, can we ask you something?" romil steps forward, with a look on his face that makes him look like he's ready to interrogate.
"sure." i can't help but feel like they're up to something. they look suspicious.
"do you know where, matt, was last night? he missed guys night, and he didn't tell us why he decided to miss out," he squints his eyes, "do you know anything?"
"oh, cut the bullshit," ameer nudges him out of the way, "we think that you were with him last night." the whole group smirks.
"and to be honest with you, we ship you both," bearface smiles, "we trust you with our, matt."
i nervously laugh, and run my hand up and down my arm, "sorry boys, i have no idea where he was last night."
"confirm or deny that you'd like a future with, matt!" merlyn blurts.
i blush, "there's nothing between us, we're just friends."
"friends with benefits?" joba asks with his eyebrows raised.
i giggle, "i promise that we're just friends." and even though i tell them that, i'm pretty sure they still don't believe it.

after a few more classes, it's finally time for lunch. my favorite part of the day where i actually enjoy myself.
i enter the cafeteria and go through the lunch line. once done, i scan around the packed room for matt. i spot his dark hair, and his hoodie that he's always wearing to hide under.
i hold my lunch tray tightly, i'm always finding new ways to fall. i walk to him, actually excited for this. a part of me doesn't know why, but the other part just feels happy to have someone to sit with.
i arrive to the lunch table, and of course, his number one fans are there too.
"hey, matt!" i greet him happily.
the same girl that i had a rough encounter with last time i was here, looks at me up and down, "you're back again?" she laughs, "how desperate are you?"
matt, stares down at his food, not moving a muscle. i can tell he's listening in on the conversation.
the girl continues, "desperate whore." everyone at the table laughs at her comments.
i usually can stand up for myself, but this time the embarrassment took over me. i can't even get a word out of my mouth without stuttering. i feel humiliated.
matt drops his fork onto his tray, "leave." he looks at her dead in the eye.
the girl looks at him with a terrified expression, "what?"
"can you fucking hear? i said leave." he repeats himself.
she daringly scoffs, "you're defending her? the girl that's always on top of your ass everywhere you go?"
"and you're not?"
she gulps, she knows she just fucked up.
"now listen to me," matt whispers across the table, "don't you ever talk to her like that again. got it?" he ends the conversation by giving her a thumbs up.
she rushes out the door, terrified, and he picks up his fork to pick up where he left off. i finally sit down, "that was kinda mean, don't you think?"
"she had it coming." he chews on his food.
i sigh, feeling guilty, "i know you have to be nice to me for the whole day, but you didn't have to pretend to care about me then defend me."
"i wasn't pretending, everlee."
