Author notes are cool.  But should be brief or have one whole page dedicated to whatever.  If it's going to be lengthy put it at the end.

If I ever do the following - slap the hell out of me.

Author notes that take up half the chapter.   It's up there with song lyrics, quote chapters, or pictures/character descriptions in terms of annoyance.  Or author notes that have NOTHING to do with the story but are in the beginning of the chapter.   Just...no. No, no, no.

The other thing...author notes that occur IN the story.  You've seen it.  The story is happening and then the author inserts their thoughts or comments regarding the character's action or some term or phrase used.

Example:      blah blah blah.  Then he said, "Get down here, you fag!"  (I'm sorry readers, I really hate that term.  I think anyone that uses that term is blah blah blah)

You don't  need to tell us that.  Really.  We understand it's part of the story.  We're not going to think negatively of you cuz...we don't know you in real life. (Most of us)  Therefore, it's impossible to pass judgement on your true character.

So just write the damn story and keep those little things out.
