(Who actually sang that in their head?) LOL
Please be aware : I am NOT against sequels. I held on for YEARS for the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. If you've never read it, you should. The movie doesn't cover enough. They never do.
However, there should be an end to a story. Ten- twenty books in and the story STILL isn't finished and secrets revealed? Come on!
And on top of it, I have to read EVERY. SINGLE. BOOK or it won't make sense? (Insert side eye/mean mug/middle finger.)
If a series is going to be long and drawn out like that, the stories should be stand-alones. If a reader is catching a series in the middle or near the end, they shouldn't have to go alllllllll the way back to the beginning to get caught up. There should be some character, letter, oracle somewhere in the story to rehash all the previous stories so the reader can continue on their journey.
Also, if you're only working on the same story forever it's almost like you have nothing else to offer the reader. Personally, I like authors that write across multiple genres. It shows they have a wide range of creativity and fresh ideas.
