I crossed my arms, getting more immersed in the water dripping from the faucet. I stared as the sounds of drops of water tapping hypnotized me. My hair rose on my arms as I stared, but was ripped out of my trance as a steaming cup of coffee was placed onto the table.
I looked up startled to see Evelyn giving me a concerned look. I felt my irritation at being interrupted fade as soon as it had appeared. "You've been in a daze all morning. Did you not get any sleep last night dear?" She asked, and I thanked her, offering a smile as I blew on the hot coffee to rid it of the steam that rose from it.
"Yes," I flinched, my throat bruised. Pictures of the man's tightening grip from last night made me shiver.
She hisses, her lips curled back. To her dismay, she lightly touched the bruises aligning my neck, her eyes crinkled in concern as a mother would. I looked up, meeting her gaze. "I take it, Elias had done this?" Her eyes blaze into anger in a matter of seconds.
I frowned. "No no, Evelyn, he didn't. A man hurt me last night but Elias saved me. I'm fine." I assured her, easing her worries.
Her eyes softened with relief. "I'm glad you're safe." I smiled. "How was Elias? Did he take you to dinner?" She added.
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "I guess so. Yeah. I mean no. I don't know."
Evelyn cocks her eyebrow at my sheepish expression. "You haven't talked to Elias?"
"No," my cheeks grow hot.
Not that I hated Elias and wanted to avoid him because of it but rather because I couldn't look him in the eyes without blushing. Ugh, his eyes. I have noticed that if you look carefully at people's eyes the first five seconds they look at you, the truth of their feelings will shine through for just an instant before it flickers away. All I could think about was how close we were and his lips inching closer to mine before Evelyn could see. The only feelings that show in his eyes were hate and had always abhorred me in that regard. But now things had changed and it scared me.
