"Evelyn!" I pushed open the car door once the car came to a halt. Without missing a beat, I rushed out of the car and up the stairs where the old maid I missed dearly stood."Oomph!" I embrace her into a bone crushing hug. "I missed you too," she chuckles, rubbing my back.
"Come on inside, I made some sugar cookies," she smiles warmly, her hand pressed against my lower back to urge me inside.
"I'm sure you've had a good trip, yes?" She asks.
I let out a breath before smiling. She stood in front of me with her eyes crinkling in delight. "And you and Elias?" She folds a knitted blanket before placing it over the velvet sofa.
I cringed, instantly knowing she would ask something about him. The trip would have been enjoyable if we got along and didn't try to throw things at each other. However, I wasn't going to tell her how much I wanted to chuck things at his head. And especially that stupid mistaken kiss.
"Um, we actually had a great time," I lied. "But I sure did miss you," I change the subject and she turns to me with soft eyes. Without another second, she takes me into her arms.
I rest my chin on Evelyn's shoulder, nestling into her warm embrace the way that I loved to do since I grown close with her. Just as I looked up, Elias stood in the doorway, his intense silver eyes on me. His gaze caught with mine and held them. They held so many emotions, some I longed to know what he was feeling but he turned his jaw, looking down at his feet. Without a word as it had remained between us the way back home, he walked out of the room.
"Evelyn?" I questioned.
"Yes?" She asks.
"You know nothing would make me happier than your world famous grilled cheese sandwich," I smiled sheepishly against her neck. Her shoulders shook in laughter.
"Well have a seat and I'll happily make that for you," she instructs with a wave of her hand and I walk, more like run towards the kitchen.
I sit and watch her pad through the kitchen towards the fridge. She grabs a tub of butter and mayonnaise before setting it onto the table where slices of bread laid. "What did you do while I was gone?" I smiled. She must have been bored somewhat. Knowing the old woman, she always found a way to enjoy the moment. It was one of the very things I admired about Evelyn.
"I actually didn't mind the time alone. I curled up and read a good book outside on the porch. It was nice outside too," a bright smile lightened her features.
I wished my trip could have been as content as Evelyn's. Despite Elias confusing the crap out of me and giving me the cold shoulder, it was nice to watch Veda marry her true love. I couldn't complain on the beautiful sights of Belize either. I sigh, "I wish you could have gone to Belize. It's truly beautiful. The water was so clear and the animals and food." Evelyn smiled knowingly as if nothing bothered her. Nothing could faze her, not even being alone? I stared at her defeatedly. "What? Have you already been to Belize?"
