Alison opened her eyes and found herself in the darkened basement of her dream house, a sanctuary that she'd been creating in her dreams since childhood. She walked over to where a large steam trunk was situated beneath a pristine white sheet. Pulling back the sheet, she saw the trunk clear as day.
Reaching out, she saw her bandaged hands and felt immediate searing pain as she touched the brass buckles. She felt a small cat rubbing its body against her leg and she smiled. Reaching down, she pet the animal and realized that the palm of her hand no longer pained her. She held up her hand and carefully removed the bandage...there was no redness...no blistering....
She picked up the cat and held it firmly against her breast. The cat shifted its body weight and placed its paws around her neck, healing the burns over her shoulders while its purring soothed her soul...but more than anything, she felt loved.
The cat chirped and she looked behind her to find the large black, wolf-looking dog staring up at her. "Hey Pup," she whispered as she lowered her bandaged hand down to scratch at his head. "I'm glad you're here."
The dog sniffed at the bandages and growled, causing her to stop moving. The dog jerked its head back and then stretched its neck to sniff at her hand. Taking her fingers in it's large mouth, he gently shook his massive head attempting to pull the gauze and tape away.
"Am I all fixed up, here, Puppy?"
Alison gently placed the cat on the floor and pulled off the bandages as if they were a glove...her left hand was perfectly healed and the dog barked happily. She reached out and touched the tips of her fingers to the brass only to hear the dog huff at her. She looked toward the dog to find it shaking his head and rolling its eyes at her.
"Yeah, yeah...okay."
She unbuckled the brass and reached into the front pocket of her jeans for the key and unlocked the trunk, listening to the tumbler click. After returning the key, she lifted the trunk to see what secrets her mother's steam trunk held...
She'd only been able to open it the once, the day she was introduced to Topher, Judy and Sebastian. She hadn't realized the connection until that moment.
She reached in and withdrew an Eagle's feather and she looked at the dog as it craned it's massive neck in an attempt to see inside it.
"Nosey," she teased. She reached to pull it off the table and felt the massive thing stuck in place. She looked around to see that nothing was keeping it in place and she returned the feather back to its resting spot and closed the lid. She pulled at the behemoth and she fell backwards, with the trunk on top of her. She looked at the barking dog.
"Are you laughing at me?"
The dog sneezed but then remained quiet.
"Bless you," she replied sarcastically as she rolled her eyes. The dog nudged at the trunk with its paw and it slipped off of her.
She opened the trunk again and took the feather in her fingers...it felt weightless. Reaching up, she placed it in her hair and felt herself floating a few inches from the cold dirt floor. She held her hand out and steadied herself against the large wolf-hybrid and pulled her legs beneath her and stood up. "I've never needed a feather before," she sighed.
"Maybe you need it to help fight those zombies?"
She smiled at hearing the voice and spun on her heels and ran over to the representation of the deceased man who had raised her. "Uncle Donny!"
It felt good to be in his arms again. He was never a touchy-feely man in life, but it was her dream and in it, he was nothing short of super man...except that he was confined to the house and surrounding property...fortunately, the property spanned farther than the eye could see.
