Sebastian's dreams were interrupted and he sniffled hard at the cool night air. He could still hear the constant buzzing as he focused his vision in the darkened tent. The obnoxious noise ceased abruptly only to start up again. He huffed and reached for his cigarettes and silver zippo lighter as well as his phone all in one swipe of his hand, like a massive paw pulling a tasty morsel toward him.

He looked at the lock screen just as the call-slider disappeared and the phone was once again, silent. His alarm was about to go off in two minutes so he had to get up anyway, but he was in the middle of a really good dream. He opened the leather case and withdrew a cigarette and lit it. He sat up, his head lightly banging on the metal pole at the back of his ruck that had shifted sometime during the night; he rolled his eyes and breathed in deeply.

He received a notification ping and turning on the phone, he read: Ali - voicemail

"Shit," he whispered.

He opened up the messages app and sent her a quick text: Alright Love...

Ali: Yeah. Just miss you is all

Sebastian: Want me to call you?

Ali: ...

Sebastian: Alisonnnnnn.....🤨

Ali: Lol please? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sebastian: Never could say no to you 😏

He cleared the screen and pressed his favorites; her mobile number was at the top of the list followed by his kids, Topher, his parents and extended family, close friends as well as a few often-called associates.

"Hey...."

He thought she sounded tired. "It's four o'clock...What are you doing up Love?"

"Couldn't sleep."

"No? Why not?" His senses immediately went to overdrive, having completely missed the first through fifth gears entirely "Is everything all right? Do you need me to come home?"

"Oh god no! It's silly really...Someone who shall remain nameless gave your daughter chocolate cake for snack and then went to bed."

"Oooh...leaving you to deal with her bouncing off the walls?"

"Yeah," she replied in her late night breathy voice that never failed to ramp him up more.

"Remind me to get with that boy when I get home," he chuckled.

She chuckled quietly into the phone. "I think he's just upset because he couldn't go with you guys."

"He wrote up the course. It wouldn't have done him any good to come...Besides, I feel better knowing that someone's at the house with you...you know?"

"Yeah, I know. Anyway...Did I wake you?"

"Nah. Time for me to get my happy arse up anyway. However, you did interrupt a delicious dream though." He yawned and settled in his sleeping bag, sighing happily. "So, tell me my love, what are you wearing?"

"A black lace cami and barely there panties," she replied.

"Oooh...now, that's a deliciously lovely visual," he purred. Then he breathed deeply. "Now...tell me what you're really wearing..."

She giggled into the phone bringing a smile to his face. "Just one of your old tee shirts and a pair of sweats."

He smiled warmly. "I like that visual far better."

"You do?"

"Yeah," he whispered. "Means the little Poppet is in the bed with you."

"Yeah, she is. Little bugger. Hasn't been asleep long."

"Then I won't keep you. Get some rest Love. This is only maneuvers, don't forget. I'll be home in a few days."

"Oh and the barely there panties? They're really there..."

He moaned into the phone. "Ali..." he whispered.

"Stay safe," she whispered. "I love you..."

"I love you too."

Sebastian placed the phone on the cinder block that he was using to keep his personal effects off the uneven ground.

"She okay mate?"

Sebastian inhaled deeply on the cigarette. "Oh yeah. James gave the baby chocolate cake for snack..."

Topher laughed quietly. "Oooo...Just remind him that payback is a bitch..."

Sebastian grinned in the darkness. "Oh, I intend to. It's gonna be fun...His Momma is ruthless..."

"Oh that boy's in trouble isn't he?"

"You'd better believe it. He just doesn't know it yet!"

Sebastian Matus sat up in his sleeping bag and rolled the gold ring on his left finger and smiled.
