Alison walked down the stairs clutching the hand rail as if her very life depended on it. Sebastian thought that it was because she was ruminating over the tides that she had faced with regard to how her life had turned out. He remembered well, the day of their beach party, when she had said that she was "done with the water," and yet, here she was, finding herself riding yet another wave, a tsunami actually...one that had everything to do with him. He prayed to the gods he knew that she would find strength in those massive waves...He felt her emotions, as deep as his own, wafting over him like the spring waves at In the Bay of Fundy during the full moon when he took a trip to surf the waves and only changed his mind when he saw just how large the largest waves on the planet really are. He snorted to himself and she looked at him with a creased brow. he apologized quietly to her, then chuckled nervously.
She stood on the porch and announced that she was going to return to Denver with him and he swallowed hard when he caught the look of determination on her face: her grandmother and aunt were not to argue with her, or Topher or Judy for that matter.
Sebastian smiled to himself...it was just like old times in that Alison was the one who actually ruled the roost...not him. Not by a long shot and he felt for the first time that he might actually have a shot at winning her back.
He escorted her to the car and got her inside. He took her over night bag and placed it in the back seat and slipped into the driver side and looked at her. She was facing front, her eyes staring at nothing in particular. "You alright," he asked quietly.
Her eyes met with his and she nodded. "Yeah," she replied quietly.
She was lying, he knew it and he figured that he'd call her on it at a later time. He certainly didn't want to engage in an argument while driving. He started the car and pulled out of the drive way. He turned on the lights and put the car in gear and drove slowly through the neighborhood. Alison peered out the window at the houses with their amber lighting and she smiled as she nodded her head in time to the music that was playing through the speakers. She asked about the music and he informed her that it was James's music, the heavy beats of the club-dance music that he liked. He told her that he played his music when ever he was worried about him, it was his way of sending various energies to his son...he didn't know any other way to do it. She lowered her head and nodded and smiled brightly.
"Well," she began, "you're doing it right."
"That's good to know."
He steered the car onto the interstate and headed north toward Denver. They passed the main entrance to the Garden of the Gods and he heard her sigh quietly as her neck craned so that she could see the lit-up formations in the darkness.
"We'll definitely visit the park while you're here," he told her as if he had been reading her mind and his own smile brightened when hers did.
"Tell me about James," she said.
"Well, he's...he's a lot like you are actually. He loves cats...Oh, my god, how he loves cats!" He grimaced and stuck out his tongue and shook his head quickly causing her to laugh. "I think he used to think he was part cat when he was little. He'd wear these silly little cat ears when he was a tot and swipe at things like a cat. We even made little plastic claws for him and he'd go around scratching at things, saying that whatever it happened to be, was now his."
Alison giggled and nodded. "Is he a wizard?"
Sebastian nodded. "Yeah. He's got his own gifts, nothing short of remarkable."
"Like what?"
"He can control fire."
"Is that why he became a firefighter?"
