After a clean bill of health for Sebastian and a tearful goodbye for Alison, they packed up their gear in the Jeep and headed west toward Manitou Springs. Alison fretted about Max having to stay in the backpack for three hours but James promised her that he seemed to enjoy it; plus, he teased that since his father insisted on driving, having Max in the Jeep might distract him.
"And your mother is a big enough distraction," he countered.
Topher stretched his legs out in the back of the Jeep, pulled his hat down over his face and slept the entire way home. "Wake me if you need me," he told his best mate, knowing that allowing only for dismemberment or death would his friend seek his assistance at the wheel.
Soon, Pikes Peak was in view and they all seemed to breathe a little bit easier...although it seemed an eternity had passed before they were nestled safely in the shadows of the foothills. They pulled up in front of the house to find Elizabeth and Alexis sitting on the porch dying of boredom. Elizabeth perked up when she saw them and ran through the house as fast as she could to inform Judy that the rescue party had returned.
Judy walked out quickly as Sebastian slipped out of the Jeep and automatically held out his hand for her to inspect. "Who wrapped this...George?"
"Ali, why?"
"Oh. Looks like a doctor did it," she said.
He looked to Alison. "Do you hold a Doctor's credentials, Love?"
She smiled as she shook her head. "Nope. I'm basically a glorified vet tech," she said.
"Why don't you see if you can go to vet school," Judy asked.
She shook her head as she slid out of the Jeep. James held Max up to her and she lowered her head and received a gentle head butt from the cat. "I'm not going back to vet school at my age. It would be a waste."
"How come," Elizabeth asked.
"Because I already know most of what I'd need just from life experience."
"Then why don't you see if you can CLEP out," Topher asked from beneath his hat. Judy reached down and removed the hat from his face. "BLINDED! I'VE BEEN BLINDED!"
"Oh do shut up," Judy said laughing.
"By your radiant beauty, Darling...you didn't let me finish!" Judy giggled, leaning into the Jeep. Topher pulled her into the back seat with him and rolled her over onto her back. "We won't be long," he said as he kissed his wife.
"Yeah, I know," Sebastian replied chuckling, reaching on the floorboard for his duffel.
Topher lifted his head and sneered at his best mate. "Fuck off," he replied.
"Hey, do whatever you want to mate, I don't care...this is your Jeep!"
Topher's face became unreadable. "Oh."
The rest of the traveling party headed for the house, leaving Topher and Judy on their own for some alone time together.
Sebastian headed for the master bedroom where Alison was staying while she headed on to the kitchen, having smelled food and went to work to keep it from burning. She looked to Alexis. "So, tell me?"
"Yes, I saw it. I saw it all...and yes, I can show you," she said proudly.
She approached Alison and held onto her from behind...Alison watched Topher disconnect the electric as well as the communications, as well as James climbing the building and Sebastian directing him from the ground. She was shown her mother and Indian Dude as well as the history lesson and she saw herself seated on the front porch swing with her father. She didn't feel the prickling on her skin.
