Alison woke up in a hospital bed surrounded by a pale blue curtain. She breathed in deeply, eying the IV line up toward the nearly empty bag of saline and a smaller empty bag of a pain medication. Rolling over, she pushed at the buttons that moved the base of the bed, allowing her to sit up. She saw someone moving toward her, and she looked up into the smiling green eyes of Sebastian Matus.
"Hey," he said in a quiet voice.
"Hey," she groaned.
"You're alive..."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Positive," he replied, as a genuine smile played across his face.
"I'm really sorry...I hit you...did I hurt you bad?"
He smiled and shook his head. "No, love. You didn't."
Her face began to crumble again. "James...I'm so sorry...I tried to get to him..."
Sebastian's eyes filled as he smiled and nodded. "I saw you...you were brilliant! Fearless...and steadfast...and everything I always knew you were..." He stood and pulled back the curtain from between the two beds and heard the gasp escape her lips. "Ali, You saved my son. I don't know what I would of done had you not been there...thank you..."
She nodded, allowing her cry of relief to flow freely. She was becoming more aware of the searing pain that coursed through her body and shook her head. "Ah it was nothing," she whispered finally through her tears.
They laughed together only for her to cease abruptly and wince, then groan.
"Pain?"
She nodded. "Yesssss..." She breathed in deeply and held her breath.
He shook his head. "No, no, no, don't do that, Love. You've got to get air, come on now...come on, you can do it, breathe with me...in with the good, out with the bad..."
Her eyes seared toward his as he grinned.
"See? I remembered."
She let the air escape from her lungs.
"Your pain level...One to ten..."
"Twenty-seven....thousand," she whispered, taking tiny breaths.
"Only that? I'll fetch someone to bring pain meds for you..."
She shook her head. "No."
Sebastian's brows rose high. "No? I'd be crying like a little bitch, I think..."
She smiled and shook her head. "Fibber," she whispered.
"Let me guess?"
She smiled and nodded as they recited together, "reminds me that I'm still alive."
He watched her actively concentrate on her breathing as her fingers splayed, reaching for his hand. He pulled over the chair that was nearby, sat and took her bandaged hand in his and kissed it.
"Where are we," she whispered.
"The magical ward of the ICU at the University of Colorado hospital in Denver," he replied quietly.
"Magical ward...I don't remember them having a magical anything..."
He smiled and nodded. "Yeah," he whispered as he leaned over her. His lips feathered a tender kiss on her brow. "I know."

Sebastian and Alison sat by James's bedside awaiting the young man's return to the here and now. Alison told Sebastian that she was attempting to locate James on the astral but had no success. She only found animals...in particular, a large black panther who stared hard at her from a distance, looking as if it was going to pounce any second.
