Alison stood completely still, watching her son scale the monolith with only moonlight to guide him. James had originally declined the use of the safety and repelling ropes until he saw the false bravery in her eyes. He reached for the harness from the bed of Topher's Jeep and strapped himself in, then headed for the mammoth formation known as "Balanced Rock."

Usually James wore the headgear that allowed him to see in the dark, but because he wanted to be able to work along side his father, it meant that he had to show his chops as it were to others who would ultimately do the hiring.

"How many times has he climbed these rocks," the HR rep whispered.

Sebastian shrugged his shoulders. "Not sure off the top of my head. We've been coming here since he was a tot. Doesn't matter anyway."

"Of course it does," she said. "He's smart, there's no doubt about that, and he could have mapped out his ascent."

Sebastian snorted and nodded. "You're absolutely right. That's why he's chosen to climb the dark side of this particular rock."

"It's certainly not the highest here."

"No it's not. You're right about that. But it is the most dangerous and difficult. We all know that he can repel..."

He continued to watch his son from afar through the night time binoculars; the young man was only a klick away and was a little more than slightly nervous for the young man as this was part of his audition. Sebastian was aware that his experience with the fire wraiths was a huge check mark in the bonus column.

"Coming down," James announced from atop the large rock. Sebastian watched with horror as he watched his son don his padded gloves, the ones that he and Topher designed.

"Oh fuck me, he's going to jump," Sebastian groaned and disappeared from the HR Rep's side and appeared beneath the rock. Alison saw him materialize before her. Through her night-time goggles, she saw him hold a finger to his lips.

"BONSAI...."

She watched in horror as her son leaped off the edge and let gravity take over. He magically slowed his descent with out the aid of a wand or words, landing on all fours, like a cat. He stood upright and saw his mother remove her headgear and run toward him.

"How was that," he asked as he removed the padded gloves that were more of a precaution than anything else.

"ARE YOU NUTS," Alison screamed at him.

"What," he asked innocently.

"You should have hit the ground with a splat," Sebastian said behind him, revealing his position in the dark. James turned and ducked, seeing the man-to-wolf transformation, prompting him to transform into a large black panther without thinking much on it...Dad's pissed, this could get ugly, were his last thoughts.

The large cat roared at the black wolf as it circled him and Topher moved Alison back toward a safe area. The HR Rep watched the impromptu melee from high above, chewing her nails.

Alison turned toward Topher. "This better be for show, Christopher Massey," she said, terror evident in her voice.

He squeezed her hand reassuringly.

Sebastian materialized before the cat and knelt down before it, taking a knee. The cat sat perfectly still, it's ears still pinned.

"Careful Sebastian," Alison warned gently.

"God damn Son, but you're absolutely beautiful!" He reached his arms out for his son and the large cat rose to its feet and took the couple steps and allowed his father to embrace him. "How long..."
