George walked into and through the house with a certain no-nonsense air about him; James could have sworn he was gliding. Alison was sitting at the kitchen table speaking privately with Alexis and she turned around and smiled.

"And here he comes to save the day..."

George Lightning Feather Matus walked through the kitchen doorway looking very much like his son with his brow raised. "We must talk and you must learn," he said quietly.

She nodded. "When?"

"On the way."

"On the way...to where?"

Sebastian and Topher walked followed by Judy and Elizabeth.

"Bastian and Topher, will follow mother. James will follow the truck on the bike. Judy, stay here with the girls."

Sebastian wasn't used to following someone else's orders. "Where are you and Alison..."

"We will be in the truck with your mother."

Sebastian shook his head. "But I don't want her anywhere near..."

"She has to learn," George said abruptly, cutting his son off.

"Where are we going, Pops," Topher asked.

"To the hospital."

"Where you used to work?"

"I still work there on occasion," George replied. "Time is short. Our only advantage is that Alison's Grandmother has to wean the information from her daughter. I have been watching and I do not believe that it will be forthcoming, but the woman seems to be quite weakened at the moment."

Understanding what George wasn't saying, Alison swallowed hard and Alexis was able to see what George saw and she wept quietly.

"I don't understand people like that," Alexis murmured. James lurched forward but Sebastian grabbed him.

"You're coming with me."

"What? Why?"

"Do you want to get suited up or do you want to go in a teeshirt and jeans?"

James' face lit up. "I get to wear armor? You said that you'd let me know when it was time so I could get fitted?"

Sebastian nodded. "Yeah I did. And well, I think it's about that time," he said as his pride showed on his face.

"Sweet," James squeaked and he disappeared with Topher and his father.

When they returned, it was only to put the convoy together and last minute equipment and communication checks. Sebastian walked over and looked into the backseat of the truck to find Alison with her eyes closed, completely strapped in, already in the astral.

Judy and the girls stood on the porch as Topher walked up the wooden steps. He embraced his daughter and kissed his wife. He looked toward Alexis and smiled. "I think James might want to say goodbye..."

Alexis shyly walked toward the curb, where James was making last minute checks on his bike. "Hey," he said.

"Hi" she replied.

"Would you do me a favor?"

She nodded.

He reached over the seat of the bike for the backpack and held it out to her. "This is Max. Would you mind kitty-sitting while we go off doing whatever it is that we gotta go do?"

She nodded and took the backpack from his hands and peered in at the cat through the plastic bubble and smiled.

"If this works out the way my dad thinks, we should be back within a few hours. And I'll um...take you to the concert. You won't have to buy me a ticket or anything. It'll be like a date."

She looked up and and nodded. "I like you too," she whispered.

Sebastian walked by. "Come on cat-boy...with your little kitty-ears..."

James puffed out his chest. "Yeah well Pops, your helmet might have the cool sonic wolf years, but your gloves can't do this..." He held up his hand and flexed his fingers, then white claws crafted from diamond-dust extended from the tips. "Not only will they slice and dice and make julienne fries, but they'll hold three times my weight in granite...at least, that's what Topher told me..."

Sebastian nodded. "Okay. Your gloves are cooler," Sebastian admitted. "Come on." He turned to face the pretty mind reader holding on to the backpack. "I promise to keep him safe," he said as he tenderly brushed his finger on her cheek and Alexis nodded.

James swung his leg over his bike and reached for his helmet. Sebastian doubled back and whispered in his ear. "Better kiss her."

"Dad, she's sixteen," he whispered through gritted teeth.

"Then kiss her cheek..." he walked ahead and climbed aboard the armored Jeep. "You fancy her enough to leave that bleedin' moggy with her..."

James swallowed hard and reached for her and kissed her lips a little harder than he meant to and she giggled. "Be safe," she said. He nodded. Then he waved to Judy and Elizabeth and secured his helmet and then eased into the street and began the three hour drive east.
