Samantha Blake kept her vigil over her son, only leaving once to accept a telephone call from her husband who was on his way home from his last deployment. Operation Enduring Freedom was about to become a distant memory for the Blakes. She returned to her seat and watched the medi-witch as well as the nurses remove the bandages from her son's body...the young man's skin was dark as midnight as it had been before and she watched with awe as hair had begun to sprout from the pores all over his body. She had never witnessed a miracle before and was moved to tears. She looked at the angel that was seated opposite her as well as the calloused man, she assumed to be a former soldier from his demeanor...he reminded her so much of her own husband.
She knelt down on her knees and took Alison's hand in hers. "I don't even pretend to understand what you did for my son, but whatever I have is yours. His father Jack is playing soldier in the sandbox and couldn't be here just yet, but he's on his way home. I told him what y'all were doing...we prayed. We prayed so hard..." she took a deep breath. And Alison smiled at her.
"I did what I could," she said.
"I can't do that...no one I know can do that..." She pointed to her son.
"You're a mundane then, Madam?"
"If you mean that I'm not like you, then you'd be correct. And you should know," she began, "that I was raised to believe in God and that witchcraft was evil...but after what I witnessed here today, your gifts have to come from The Almighty, Himself..."
"Misses Blake, I feel that I should caution you. You and your family will probably come under some heavy fire from your extended family, friends and congregation. They'll likely see us as spawns of Satan himself," Sebastian cautioned.
"You're probably right, but I don't care...I know what I saw..." she squeezed Alison's hands.
Alison looked into her eyes. "Where are you from, Misses Blake? I hear a little bit of a southern accent in your voice?"
"Harker Heights, Texas...it's a small Army town outside of Fort Hood."
"So you're an Army wife then? I'm a Navy brat," Alison said.
Samantha grinned. "Well, nobody's perfect."
Alison laughed, breaking the tension in the room. Sebastian walked toward the door way, and signed a silent message with his hands to his men.
"No sign of them Sir," the one guard said.
Sebastian nodded and took out his phone and texted Topher. Then he walked into the room to his son's bedside. "Reckon you're going to have to shave your head after all, eh," he teased.
James's hands went to his hair, where the Fire Wraiths burned about a quarter of his hair away. "I know," he whined. "Dad, do you think it's true? What they say about the loss of power?"
"I hope not. For your sake. But if it is, we'll work it out. Perhaps it's something that Ali can fix up?"
James nodded still looking miserable. "How's Alex..."
"Why don't you go have a look?"
James slid over his bed, IV and all and shuffled his feet toward the other side of the curtain. James beamed when he saw that his friend's eyes were open. "Sup Man..."
"Suuuup, Jamie...what the hell happened, man?"
"Fire wraiths happened."
Alex snorted. "Sounds like something from our D and D games, don't it?"
James nodded. "Yeah...How do you feel?"
Alex nodded. "Like a cool million! If I had wings, I'd be flyin' my niggah!"
