Sebastian escorted Alison back outside with the others who were sitting in relative silence, the only sound being the two teens who were playing a wizard's version of dominoes, the object being to build a castle with your colored tiles. The adults watched the walls and battlements change colors several times before the girls grew bored of it and asked to go inside. Judy suggested that they get ready for bed, so that when they were ready, they could simply go to sleep.
"Sleep," Alison yawned. "Sounds like a marvy idea," she said. Her gaze met George's. "Do you mind if we chat tomorrow?"
He nodded once and blinked his eyes slowly instantly reminding her of the totem, Cat.
"Dad," Sebastian began, "would you like to go home or stay here the night, or you're welcome to bunk at my place...?"
"I have things to do."
Sebastian sighed and nodded. "Just let me know when you're ready to go home."
George stood up immediately.
Sebastian chuckled, "now?"
George looked to his son but said nothing else. Then seated himself again.
"I'm going to head on to Denver. I don't want James to wake up and see that no one is there..."
She placed her fingers on his wrist and got to her feet with urgency "Can I go with you?" She nodded with pleading eyes.
He gazed deeply into her eyes and for a moment, there was only her. Then, Grandmother cleared her throat and his gaze flitted toward the older woman as she sipped at her cup of tea.
He licked his lips and smiled. "I would love to have you come to Denver with me..."
Her smiled beamed brightly and she watched his smile fade oh-so-slowly. He slid his arm around her shoulders and turned her around, as he lead her back inside.
"But you need your rest, Love," he said quietly. "You really do. I'll be back in a few days, hopefully sooner. My leave request has been secured, so unless all hell breaks loose I'll have a few weeks..."
"But I don't have a few weeks," she whined.
His face instantly fell. "Why not?"
"I already miss my horses and my dogs...my kitties too. They all probably think I abandoned them..."
"Well, lets bring them out here?"
Her entire body drooped and she raised her brows and glared at him.
He in turn held out his arms. "WHAT?!"
"Who said anything about moving! I'm here on vacation, something I haven't been able to do since I can remember...I've been working for what feels like forever and now that it's just me..." Her face crumbled and she turned away, and stood in place for a moment attempting to pull herself back together.
He moved closer. "I just thought..."
She walked onto the large covered porch. "Besides it would cost a small fortune to bring my furry brood to live here...I've no where to put my horses..."
George silently held up his index finger as he continued to stare into space.
"You're not helping," Grandmother grumbled as she kicked him under the table.
When Alison motioned that he should turn around, he looked just in time to see his father stand abruptly. "Oh hell," Sebastian whispered.
"May I remind you Madam, the lost child was my grandson. You and your family were not the only ones who suffered! My wife suffered and this precious girl over there suffered, and yes Madam, MY SON SUFFERED!"
