Fiction.

Finding out you’re going to be a dad at thirteen is the scariest thing ever. In the start you feel shocked and surprised. Then comes denial and some more shock. Then acceptance that soon follows with shame. Having to tell your family that you’re sexually active and got someone pregnant brings the biggest amount of shame, especially for my family. They always talked highly of me and then I go and do something like this. I wanted to run away so badly but that’d make things worse.

My name is James Owen Sullivan, my friends and family call me Jimmy. I’m thirteen years old. I live in Huntington Beach, California with my mom and dad. I’m just like every other teenager. I go to school and I work a part time job during the summers. I play drums as well. I guess I’m no longer a normal kid.

Let me tell you about a girl I met. Her name is Rosie Jones. She’s Latin and damn is she beautiful. She and I have been dating since the fifth grade. So we’ve been dating for nearly three years. It wasn’t until recently that she let me go from first base to second then to third and then bring it in for a home run. Sadly that resulted in her getting pregnant. She told me right away.

Two days later I sat down with my mom and dad and I told them but not after I discussed it with my best friends Matt Sanders, Zack Baker and Brian Haner. They didn’t really know how to react but they said that we were still cool which was awesome; I thought I’d lose all my friends because of it. When I told my parents they weren’t happy with me. But I said that we were being safe it’s just, it broke and shit happens. Now I’m going to be a dad by the time I’m fourteen.

So this summer instead of working part time I’m working full time. I want to keep the baby because it’s my child as well. But if Rosie wants to give it up for adoption I’ll understand, just as long as I get to see it. Rosie suggested abortion and I flipped out on her. But if we do keep the baby, I’m going to be there. I’m not going to be a dead-bee dad. And that’s final.
