Chapter 24: What Did I Do?

The front door slammed shut and a pair of thunder feet stormed up the stairs. The school day was over and Peasnie was obviously home. Matt and Val picked her up from school and drove her home. I was just wiping off the counters quickly so I could start making dinner. I walked into the living room confusedly.

Peasnie’s bedroom door slammed shut and instantly loud music came from up the stairs. I looked at Val confusedly with an arched eye brow. She wore a white tank top with a nice jean jacket over top and jeans. Her hair was tied up but pieces fell down into her face. Matt was just giving off a blank expression. He instantly made himself at home but he was left thinking long and hard by this.

“What happened?” I asked curiously. She shook her head with her hands on her hips. Matt was still trying to figure what just happened out. I was seriously confused, what was going on? Did something happen?

“I don’t know.” Val replied sullenly. I looked over at Matt who was left scratching his head.

“I honestly have no fucking clue what happened. She was mad at me the whole ride here.” He uttered softly. I sighed heavily and walked up the stairs with a slight skip in my step. The music was loud and heavy. I don’t know how this kid isn’t deaf yet. I hovered outside the door quietly. There are only twelve weeks of school left before summer holidays and we’re going camping up in Canada.

My knuckles tapped the door loud enough for her to hear it. The door opened to the tall girl who was obviously in distress. Her hair was cut short but it still curled slightly. Her makeup was smeared across her face while her clothes were wrinkled slightly. The blue graphic tee shirt and green skinny jeans were wrinkled from the day. The sight of Peasnie’s distress worried me.

“What?” She sounded so pleased to see me. She gazed up at me with an arched eye brow. I could tell she was removing the makeup but it smeared her china doll like face. I smiled slyly at her and examined the room behind her. It was already a right mess even though she cleaned it yesterday before doing her homework. I looked back down at her and let my smile fade.

“How was your day, kiddo?” I asked wanting to find out why she was so mad. Her face twisted into an annoyed and raged expression.

“Horrible, I’m never going back.” She said flatly.

“You can talk to me, I’ll try and help.” I replied softly. Her nostrils flared as a frown pressed her lips. Her face became disgusted and worrying.

“How can you help?! You’re just as much apart of the problem as the rest of them!” She shrieked at me before slamming the door in my face. I was left dumbfounded. What the actual fuck?  What happened that she’s mad at me? I went back down stairs where Val was still just as puzzled as I was. I was so confused by this. Matt was dumbfounded by this. What the hell did I do? I arched an eye brow carefully.

“Val, do you mind talking to her? Maybe she’ll talk to you.” My voice was barely noticeable over the loud music. Val made a smug expression before heading up stairs. I know if that wasn’t Val or Michelle or Gena, she wouldn’t talk. Peasnie honestly doesn’t like Lacy but that’s fine, I do and that’s what matters. I hope I really wasn’t the reason behind this; it would kill me to know this.

The music was turned off soon after Val vanished up the stairs. A door closed and Matt and I were left waiting downstairs, it’s like waiting for someone to get out of surgery. My anxiety levels were sky high while I waited for a reason behind this out burst. They were up there for what seemed like hours, I was able to finish two beers with Matt and watch a little part of the soccer (football) game.

The bedroom door opened and shut again and Val came down the stairs with a satisfied expression on her face but it was covered in disgust. She had tear stains and makeup marks on her jacket and shirt. I jumped to my feet and wobbled a little bit before steadying myself. Matt joined me, I’ve always stood taller than him.

“So? What happened?” I asked her with a cautious voice. Val crossed her arms over her chest and popped her hip out again. From the way she was standing it wasn’t good. When chicks do that it’s never a good sign, it tells you, you either did something to piss her off or something happened and she isn’t happy.

“From what I got, the boys at school made a list of who the prettiest girls in the school were and put them in order and she was last.” Val said softly. My gut sank into nothing, well that explains alot. It explains why I’m apart of it, I’m a boy so yeah. But Peasnie wouldn’t care about a stupid list some horny school boys made. She’s better than that. I really dislike teenage boys now; they hurt my daughter’s feelings and made her cry.

“And.-“She’s really sensitive right now and will be for the next week.” Val added quietly. I inhaled sharply and nodded as I finally got why Peasnie was so upset about the list. It all makes sense now, yep-yep. It’s a bit awkward though, these are things a dad needs to know but doesn’t want to know. I mean like what guy wants to know about this, honestly? I know it’s natural but it’s still not cool.

“Okay, then.” I said softly, trying to get off the subject. I didn’t really like talking about it. Never have. It’s a chick thing and they should talk about it with each other not with guys. It’s like cruel torture to know about these things.

Val, Matt and I sat down on the couch and socialized while Peasnie was still up in her room alone. I heard her bedroom door open and close again and tiny footsteps fell down the hall way. Peasnie shamefully walked down the stairs in a pair of sweat pants, an old tee shirt and her slippers. She hung her head in shame before looking at Matt and me.

“I’m sorry for yelling at you two, you didn’t do anything wrong.” She apologized sweetly.

“It’s okay, I guess we are apart of the problem since we did the same thing when we were your age.” Matt admitted in a sympathetic way. I nodded I agreement. It was true; we did the same thing in freshman year. We made up a list of girls who were the prettiest. We called it the top ten. It hurt alot of people’s feelings. We are no better than those boys. We’re just older.
