At school-
"Al washes a car in 6 minutes," Mr. Feeny started off with a problem. "Fred washes the same car in 8 minutes. How long will it take Al and Fred to wash the car together?"
"Piece of cake," Cory spoke up as I wrote the problem down.
"Think about it, Mr. Matthews," Mr. Feeny told him.
"I don't have to think about it, Mr. Feeny. It's simple."
"It is anything but simple, Mr. Matthews."
"But I've got the answer."
"I'm not interested in the answer."
"Why not?"
Mr. Feeny walked over to Cory. "Because I'm more interested in how you arrive at the answer. And you couldn't possibly have arrived at the correct answer so rapidly."
"But I did. I've arrived. I'm here. I'm ahead of you."
"Oh, well, then if you're ahead of me what is the answer?" Mr. Feeny questioned.
"7," Mr. Feeny and Cory say.
"That's not the correct answer," Mr. Feeny told him.
"But it has to be. Al speeds Fred up. Fred slows Al down. So the answer is halfway between 6 and 8. 7," Cory told him.
"That's not the correct answer," they both say again.
"But it has to be," Cory exagerates.
"No, it doesn't," Minkus stood up and stood in front of Cory.
"Why not?" me and Cory ask at the same time.
"Fred can't slow Al down. Even if Al washes most of the car and Fred just washes a hubcap the total time still has to be faster than Al's time alone. You with me? So," Minkus got out his calculator. "If Fred is 25% slower than Al then 25% of 6 minutes is-" He paused, looking around the classroom. "Anybody?" we all stay silent. "It's a minute and a half which leaves us with...4.5. Four and a half minutes is the correct answer. Hold your applause, please," Minkus sat back down.
"Mr. Minkus, you're wrong," Mr. Feeny told him.
My jaw dropped as I looked to Shawn, grabbing his arm.
"Wrong? As in not right?" Minkus gasped.
"You know the law of averages better than I do. It was bound to catch up with you." Minkus stood up and began to walk out. "Where are you going?" Mr. Feeny asked.
"Nurse," he answered before walking out.
Cory looked back at me and Shawn, a smile grows on my face. "Minkus, you're wrong," Shawn repeated.
"I've been waiting to hear those words since pre-school," Cory said.
"I've been waiting to hear those words since I moved here," I grin.
"Does anyone else have any thoughts on this problem? On this problem?" Mr. Feeny spoke up.
Topanga leaned back in her seat, looking up and meditated. "I'm channeling the ancient Egyptian mathematician who first solved this problem."
Confused, Cory, me and Shawn all look up.
I look back to Topanga who grabs pencil start writing while gurgling.
Shawn snapped his fingers. "Check, please," he joked causing me to giggle.
"All right, Ms. Lawrence," Mr. Feeny said. "Let's see what you've come up with." He looked at her paper. "Well, oddly enough you and your metaphysical lab partner have arrived at the correct answer."
