At the Matthews home, me, Cory, Topy and Shawn went into the kitchen.

"Honey, a tonsillectomy is a really simple operation," Mrs. Matthews told him.

"Yeah. You stay overnight in the hospital, you eat Jell-O and you come home the next day," Topy added.

"I don't need an operation," Cory said with a scratchy voice.

"Then why are you talking like that?" I ask.

"I just irritated my tonsils brushing my teeth. It's that darn angle toothbrush," Cory answered.

Topy turned to my boyfriend. "Shawn, tell your friend he has to go to the hospital."

Shawn just shrugged. "I'm sorry, Topanga. I've got some serious problems with doctors and I don't think I have to explain why."

"Explain why," I say, crossing my arms.

"Fine. Last night I'm flipping through the channels, all right? I'm watching CNN," Shawn began.

"You're watching CNN?" Cory asked.

"Oh, yeah. They suckered me in with this story about cake, but then they did an expose on a 15-year-old boy, went to the hospital for a routine procedure and vanished."

"Vanished?" Cory asked anxiously before running upstairs. "I want a second opinion."

"Cory!" I call to him.

"Cory, you're missing the point here. Cake!" Shawn also called.

"Shawn. You, go home. You're scaring my son," Mrs. Matthews told him.

"I'm sorry, but it's my duty to stay and protect my friend."

Topy opened the door and pushed him out the door. "And I am protecting Cory from you."

Shawn glared at her. "You know, I could take you, Topanga."

I roll my eyes, also pushing him out the door following. "But you can't take me," I reply before telling Topy and Mrs. Matthews, "I'll be back to check on him."

"Great, I'll come back with you," Shawn told me as I pulled him by the hand away from the house.

"No, you won't. I won't let you scare Cory."

"I'm looking out for him," Shawn replied.

"Sure, handsome," I sass.
