At school, Topy, Debbie, and I approached our lockers as Debbie explained her date. "He took you to Le Chardonnay? That’s really expensive," Topy noted.

"Yeah I know, it was great," Debbie stated. "We were talking and laughing and having such a great time, and then..."

"At the end of the night..." I began in a knowing tone.

"Parked two blocks from my house..." she continued.

"Octopus time," Topy finished.

A guy walks up to Debbie, Gary, I think. "Hey. Great time the other night," he said before he walked away to which Debbie rolled her eyes and looked to us.

"All over me," Debbie said. "I mean, what happened to the nice guy I had dinner with? It’s like, the night’s almost over so he’s all over me?" She sighed. "Why are guys such jerks on dates?"

"Well not all guys, Debbie," Topy stated.

"Yeah," I say in agreement. "Not all guys act like jerks on dates." I mean sometimes but not completely.

"After a night of fighting him off, it’s like, I don’t know whether I want to go out on dates anymore, you know? I’d rather spend my time in the library. It’s that pathetic," Debbie spoke.

"It’s too bad guys and girls have such a different idea about what a date is supposed to be," Topy replied.

"Yeah. What goes on in their heads?"

I glance behind at Cory and Shawn then looks back to Debbie. "Wanna find out? There’s of ours right there."

"Hey, what goes on in your heads?" Debbie spoke directly to them.

"Topanga," Cory answered as he taps his head. "Twenty-four hours a day it’s the Topanga Channel in here."

"Aw, who’s a good boy," Topy spoke to him.

Shawn hugged me from behind, making me smile. "Betty Cooper. All-day every day," he told her before he asked, "Debbie, don’t you think that, uh, guys and girls are looking for the same things on dates?"

"Well, girls are looking for an evening of good conversation and, you know, the sense that you’ve made a genuine connection with another human being," Debbie explained to which I nod in agreement.

"You’re not interested in making out?" Shawn asked.

"Well maybe I am and maybe I’m not, but it shouldn’t be expected because I went on a date with you."
