At home, "Okay, Mrs. Matthews. Tell Cory I hope he feels better...Thank you, bye," I say, hanging up the phone. "Hi, Mom," I greet her as she was coming into the kitchen.

"Hi, sweetie," she replied, preparing breakfast. " What's the matter with Cory?"

"Cory's sick, Mrs. Matthews just called to tell me we won't be going to school together today," I answer.

"Oh, too bad. Well, my shift is over early today. Why don't I pick up Cory's favorite dish from the diner and after school, your brother, you and I can go watch a new scary movie at the theater?"

"Mom, that sounds great, but I can't today. I'm working at Uncle Mike's with Shawn to break off the rust of not working with cars in a long time."

"Oh yeah," Mom smiled. "You still remember how to work on cars, thanks to-"

"Thanks to Carla's dad in California," I finish.

"Plus, it's more time with Shawn," Mom teased.

"Oh, mom, please," I brush her off.

At school-

"Where's Cory?" Topy asked Shawn and I.

"Didn't you hear?" I ask to which she shook her head. "He's out sick. He's real sick, he's got something awful from what his mom told me."

"How awful?"

"Hey, today's film-strip day in Sex Ed and he's not here," Shawn answered.

"Oh, dear," Topy said.

Mr. Turner came in. "All right, everybody, here's your test scores." He dug through his bag. "Oh, no. Oh, no Oh..." He pulled out two baby bottles. "Your test scores are going to be delayed for a little while, until I can track down the lady on the bus with the screaming twins, who now has my bag."

"You took a bus?" I ask. "What happened to your motorcycle?"

"Days couldn't start any better than this. Some guy misjudges the width of the-oh, I don't know, the whole street, and runs over my bike. And then he decided what he really needed to do now is back up."

"Oh, Mr. Turner, you love that bike. You must be so upset," Topy said.

Shawn stood up. "Hey, out of respect, let's end this class right now and let the man have some time alone with his feelings."

We all got up, but Mr. Turner said,
"Oh, no, no, no sit down. Sit down. I need to be around people."

"So you going to get it fixed?" I questioned.

"Oh, yeah. On my enormous teacher's salary I can get the bike fixed. And with the money I have left over-Ha! I can buy licorice."

"Here's what I got for you two words.
Uncle Mike's," Shawn said, getting a confused look from our teacher. "I'm gonna need more words. Uncle Mike's Motorcycle Repair Shop."

"Your Uncle Mike?" Mr. Turner asked.

Shawn stood up, walking over to him. "Just thought I'd mention it. You can think about it tomorrow on the bus.
I'll just be leaving a business card."

Mr. Turner looked at it. "'Lucky Leo's Bail Bonds and Prosthetics. One way or another, we get you on your feet'."

"Sorry, wrong uncle," Shawn said, taking the card back before digging through a stack of cards.

After school, at Uncle Mike's garage, I was working on a car with Shawn. Apparently the guy wanted his car in street race condition.
