Breaking Up is Really, Really Hard To Do

The Golden Trio was at Chubby's as Cory read off an invitation, but me and Shawn weren't paying attention.

"'Stephanie and Todd invite you to a dinner party at Todd's place. Couples only'." I wave off Cory, focusing all my lip action on Shawn. "Guys, that's discrimination. It leaves out a lot of people who have committed themselves to the single life. People like you and me."

Shawn and I part. "Huh?"

"What?" I ask.

"People like me," Cory corrected.

"Remember in health class, that section on the movement of blood?" Shawn asked, then looked to me. "I understand it now."

I roll my eyes with a smile. "Fine, bail on your best friend," Cory said, sitting down.

"Cory, just ask a girl and you can go too," I suggest.

"Look, there's Wendy," Shawn pointed out. "You know her, you like her. Ask her to be your girlfriend."

"Just for the party? That's not right," Cory said.

"It is right. You're supposed to do that. You're thinking too much. Do what I do, don't think," Shawn told him.

"Betty, tell me what to do," Cory said.

"Cory, I'm not your mother, you're a big boy, do what you want. It's your choice," I advise.

Cory got up causing Shawn to wrap his arm around me. "So, where were we?" he asked.

"You were going to ask me to the party as your date," I tell him.

"Oh, come on. You're my girlfriend, wouldn't that be an automatic yes?"

"Don't know, I could be busy."

"Doing what?"

"Like..." I tried to think of something. "Working on my skateboarding tricks, find new Walkman tapes and watch 90210."

"Okay, Betty Cooper, will you go with me to Stephanie and Todd's party as my date?" He pecked my forehead. "Please?"

"Are you going to dump me afterwards?" I ask.

"Never," he replied.

"Okay, I'll go with you."

Cory came back over. "Shawn! Hey, look at me, I'm a couple."

I gave him a thumbs up.

A week after the party, the three of us were talking during lunch when a girl walked up to Cory.

"Hi, Cory," she greeted.

"Oh, Bunny. Hi," he replied.

"Can you help me with my English homework?"

"Sorry, I can't tonight."

"Oh," was all she said before walking away.

Cory turned to us. "What's with the girls in our English class? That's like the fifth one who's asked me for help with homework."

I share a look with Shawn who said to him, "Cor, are you that clueless?"

"Clueless? Obviously I'm the one who knows what the homework is."

I laughed. "Oh, Cory. Sweet, stupid Cory."

"They don't want homework, they want you," Shawn answered.

"Why?" Cory asked.

"Because you're a couple. You're off the market. They can't have you, they want you more."
