At school, it was career day at school and let's just say, that I did tell my mom, but she wasn't here...

"Hey, Cor, it's your dad. He's doing career day. All right," Shawn pointed out.

"It's not all right. Today we find out I'm not a basketball player's son. My dad is a grocer. I'm a grocer's son. I'm a son of a grocer," Cory complained.

That's how I felt. My mom was a waitress in California too and when a boy found out, he called my family poor and my mom broke when she worked multiple jobs to have a house out there.

Mr. Matthews came up to us. "Hey, Shawn, Betty, Cory, um-Guess how many different kinds of rice we have?"

"Oh, no," Cory groaned.

"Come on, guess," Mr. Matthews urged us.

"Ten?" Shawn guessed.

"Eleven?" I ask.

"Ten, Eleven," Mr. Matthews scoffed. "Twenty one. And that's not even
counting the short grains. Throw them in...Forget about it!"

Once Mr. Matthews was gone, Shawn spoke, "Cory?"

"Yeah?" he asked.

"I'm glad I'm not you."

"I love your family, Cor, but I second that," I say.

"Betty, where's your mom?" Cory asked.

"She's not here. Most likely at work," I reply, sinking in my desk.

"First of all, I would like to say thank you to the parents for being here," Mr. Turner spoke. "After they speak, you guys should have a better idea of what kind of vocations interest you." Shawn raised his hand. "Let me guess, Hunter-summer vocation?" Shawn nodded. "Find some new material, will ya? Our first speaker is Topanga's father, Jedediah Lawrence."

I clap for Topy's dad. "Thank you, Mr. Turner. I think I should begin by telling everybody what I do-I'm a luthier."

"And I'm a Presbyterian, but to each his own, I say," Shawn spoke.

I hit his arm for his response.

"A luthier makes musical instruments," Jedediah answered.

"No offense, sir, but that's got to be the nuttiest religion I ever heard."

"Shawn," I whisper hiss.

Mr. Turner laughed as Jedediah turned to him. "Don't worry, it's not you."

"Daddy, forget about all that. Tell them who called last night," Topy told him.

"Oh, they don't want to hear about that, Tippy," Jedediah replied.

"Tippy?!" the boys exclaimed.

Topy turned in her seat and growled at them. "Tippy's nice," Cory replied.

"It's my new favorite name," Shawn added.

"Well, it's really no big deal, but Bruce," Jedediah answered.

"Bruce Springsteen?" Mr. Turner and I ask, simultaneously.

"Uh-huh," Topy nodded. "I took the call. He said, 'Hey, little girl, is your daddy home?'"

"So you make guitars for a lot of big rock stars?" a boy asked.

"Most of them," Jedediah answered. "But I guess my real love is playing these things."

Jedediah began to play the guitar amazingly. Even though I've seen him play many times, it still amazed me.

"He's toast," I say with Shawn.
