Turnaround

"Turnaround dance, huh? Girls ask the guys. Merry Christmas to me," I heard Shawn say as he and Cory walked to his locker.

I turn back to Topy. "I still can't believe you don't wanna go to the turnaround dance."

"Betty, you know why. The concept of a turnaround dance, implies that all the other times, only the boys can do the asking. That's-"

"Destructive, gender-biased thinking, and we have to get beyond that," I finish. "Yeah, I know. I listened. I also know that you can't because you said your dad taking you to New York for shopping. Lucky."

"Will it make you feel better if I bring something back for you?"

I smiled. "I'd like that."

"But you're going to the turnaround dance?"

"Yep, I know who to ask."

I walked over to where Cory and Shawn was. Shawn was in his locker causing Cory to scold him. "Shawn! Come on, positioning. How do you expect to get asked out with your head in a locker?"

"Like this," I answer as Shawn took his head out. "Shawn, would you go to the turnaround dance with me?" 

"Betty? How are you? Sure, I'll go," he said.

I smiled. "Pick you up at eight?"

"I'll wear something sexy."

"See you then," I tell him before pecking his lips and walking back to Topy.

She looked at me. "Um, Betty, what was that?"

I shrugged. "Look like a kiss."

"Are you and Shawn together? Together together?"

I smiled bigger. "Yeah, but..."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"For the same reason she didn't tell me," Zack came behind Topy causing her to turn around to face him. "Oh, hi, Topanga. Didn't see you there?"

"Hello, Zack. How are you?" 

"I'm all right. So the Turnaround dance..."

"Yeah, she's not going," I spoke. 

"What? Why?" 

"My daddy is taking me shopping in New York," she answered. 

"Wow, dad's gotta love 'em," he awkwardly said.

"Now that's settled, I'd appreciate it if you didn't hit on my friends," I spoke.

He sighed. looking down the hall. "Archie, she's not going."

Once he was gone, Topy turned back to me. "Now, I can't believe you didn't tell me about Shawn. When? How? I thought you guys were only just friends."

"Almost a month ago, we talked at my house. We had a moment and I just kissed him," I tell her. "I only didn't tell you or Zack because I was unsure how you would handle the whole thing."

"I'm happy for you, I am. But if he breaks your heart-"

"Topy, I've been through this with my own brother, okay? I don't wanna hear it from my friend."

"I'm looking out for you." I roll my eyes as we approached the guys. "Hey, Cory Shawn. What are you guys doing?"

"Oh uh we're just standing and being here-" Cory started.

"And hoping a girl asks you to the dance?" I ask.

"Could be."

"Well, I'm not going," Topy told him.
