At school, Shawn, Cory, Topy, and I were sitting in Mr. Turner's class who was handing out marked assignments.

He handed me my paper. "Cooper, good. " He hands Topy her paper. "Lawrence, good." Then Cory's. "Matthews, not bad." And he finally hands Shawn his paper. "Hunter, bad."

The school bell rang to which Shawn replied, "Turner, bell."

Everyone packs their things and get up to leave, as Shawn stands, Mr. Turner blocks his way. "Wait. hold on, hold on." Shawn stops, looking uninterested but allows Mr. Turner to speak. "Y’know, you’re a junior in high school now, Shawn. You have no goals as far as I can see. Have you even thought about college?"

"I’m going to college!" Shawn exclaimed, mildly incredulous.

"Oh, you are?" Mr. Turner questioned. "Where?"

"Hawaii, "Shawn answered. "I figure I have a better shot outside the country."

I just held in a smile, letting him continue while Mr. Turner paused, "You know, Shawn, the people who care about you in this life, you can count on one hand. So don't-don’t blow me off, okay?

Cory and Topy stay hovering beside me as Shawn continued, "John, I’ve got people who care about me."

"Y’know, Shawn, I think Mr. Turner’s right," Cory added. "Okay, I mean we’ve got one more year of high school, and the humidity in Hawaii is gonna make my hair go-" He extended his hands up while saying, "Whoo!"

I chuckled while Topy added, "Well, I wanna go to Penn State."

Cory puts his arm around Topy as he said, "And I wanna go where she goes! Anyone surprised by that?"

I approach and wrap an arm around Shawn's middle. "I wanna go where my Shawny goes."

Shawn grinned, pulling me more into him. "That's the power of love," he stated.

"We're in love," I told Mr. Turner in a giggly tone.

"I see that," Mr. Turner told me before looking back to Shawn. "Tick tock. The clock is moving and you’re running out of time to figure out your life."

"Hey. John, you’re not my guardian anymore. I’m back with my parents-I’ll be fine," Shawn replied.

"Yeah, Shawn, but I’m one of the handful of people who cares about you. Y’know? Now your parents are busy, trying to work out their marriage. So are they."

He motions to Cory and Topy who are shuffling out of the classroom to which I quietly laugh. "Yeah, they are married, aren't they?"

Mr. Turner continued, "And you know, you’ve had four years of security in these halls, but they throw you out next year, Shawn. What’re you going to do then? Huh? Who are you going to be?"
