A short story from the end of the movie crimson peak.
***
After the series of brutal murders that occurred in the cursed damn mansion that would change Edith's life forever. With all the rest of the energy she had, Edith dragged Doctor Alan out from the Allerdale hall.
It was perhaps the longest and the worst winter of Cumberland. The cold was no longer able to stop her steps, like trees and frozen ground covered with snow, so did her heart, numb and cold. She wanted to stay away from the house as far as possible leaving those painful memories behind. Even though Alan has been stabbed twice, she was grateful Thomas did not kill her childhood friend. She thanked to the heaven she was alive although she was not in her best condition. And they were lucky enough, help was on the way.
Alan was barely able to walk without Edith's help. His stride was heavy, it was as heavy as getting dragged. Yet Edith kept on her spirit encouraging him to keep on moving as well as to distract herself from her pain almost as much to distract him from his.
We can do this.
Edith.
There were no words needed between them. Both of them delirious with chattering teeth and trembling flesh. They were breathless at the moment. Edith looked at Alan with a mixture of feelings that she can hardly describe. Alan was her savior. Someone who didn't expect for her to come, he had walked in the snow for three hours just to reach for her.
The sound of the carriage was heard from a distance. They both gazed in the same direction. Help was in sight. A smile grew on their face as the carriage draw nearer.
A middle-aged man jumped from a train as soon as the horse stopped. The man rushed and helped Alan. Even in the situation like this, Alan thought of her safety first.
"This young lady is sick, please assist her first." Alan said panting.
The man nodded and helped her to get inside soon followed by Alan. They didn't want to waste any more time. As a doctor, he knew his own condition. He will survive through this. What he's worried about was Edith. She's sick, very sick. Alan knew she was trying hard not to show.
Unlike the other soul, when Thomas died, he did not see such a light. He did not go where every soul else went. His life was full of sin. He was a tainted soul. He didn't want to bond there for eternity. He wanted to leave the house. He wanted to be on the side of Edith, protecting and guarding her, something that he unable to do when he was alive. From the far side of Thomas's soul watched Edith with concern as they got on the carriage.
Edith helped Alan to sit in a comfortable position, pulled his jacket closer to his chest. "Get some rest," she said as she cupped his cheek with her hands. He nodded weakly to her. She knew he needs it. They made eye contact for a moment. She knew she doesn't deserve him, doesn't deserve his love. He deserved someone far better than her. A woman who may love him back.
Glancing out the window, everything was in white, no sign of life. Edith felt the chill through, she was able to feel Thomas's presence like he was still alive and around. She can no longer hold her tears. She sobbed quietly, she didn't want Alan to hear her cry though. How sad and heartbroken she was, knowing the person she loved dare lied to her, deceived her and did such horrible thing such as poisoning her. Yet she still love him.
She leaned back slightly and held her stomach. A rush of emotions conflicted in Edith's skull. What if... She shook her head. More tears run through her cheeks. She's not sure yet, but if she was with a child, Thomas never even knew he was going to be a father.
Little did she know, Thomas was there in front of her. She could feel him, yet she couldn't see him. He wanted to comfort his beloved wife, hold her, yet what can he do? He was a soul. A spirit. Seeing her in this state, sadness crept up into his unbeating heart. If that day Thomas did not choose her, if he did not court her, if he did not lead her to this hell, everything will be different. Yet Edith was the first woman he chose himself. Her personality, her beauty has made him fall in love. And one matter he never regretted for loving his beautiful Edith.
She felt like a mess. Red droplets specked her golden hair. Her right cheek had been sliced open, the hem of her gauzy nightgown had soaked blood and rot. Her hands wounded. Lucille's blood was on her hands from the last battle. Edith didn't want to kill, she never knew she would be able to kill someone until today.
Edith was growing increasingly weaker and coughing up blood. She covered her mouth yet she couldn't stop coughing. Blood was running down her shaking hands onto her lap. Her lips was trembling. This was no place to die.
Throughout her memory, she remembered she has stopped drinking the tea that Lucille made. The last one goes into her body was the porridge. And Lucille must have poisoned the food. Oh God.
Every amount of blood she vomited made her body grew weaker. A pressure in her stomach made her condition even worse. She didn't even hear when Alan called her name.
"Edith... Oh God... " he exclaimed.
She can barely afford to sit up straight as Alan pulled her into his embrace. She was half conscious but Alan kept on yelling her name.
"Edith.....Edith..."
"Y-Yes.." her voice was barely audible even to her own ears.
"I-I'm so ssorry." that was all she capable of saying.
Alan didn't know how much poison she's been consumed. And it looked like the poison began reacting. She required medical attention immediately otherwise the poison inside her will spread to the other organs and threaten her life.
"Nooooo..." he refused to accept.
Alan went to shake her shoulder and called out her name couple times. She opened her eyes finally. The way he looked at her like she was the only person in the world.
He cupped her cheeks as he said "Listen to me. You're going to make it. Don't you dare to give up. You'll die of old age. Not today. Not in this place. Do you understand me?"
Alan was crying and Edith never saw this man cried...especially for her.
"Promise me edith...promise me...you have to hold on. Don't you dare to leave me."
Edith didn't answer yet she nodded weakly to him. Colours were almost drained from her face. It felt like eternity and they were running out of time. They didn't know how far it's still to reach for the hospital and he can't imagine of losing her.
He placed his hand behind her head and cradled it, holding and pressing her closer. She clinged to him as if it was for her dear life and he smell like home. He hold onto her even tighter muttering a simple plea to her ; please don't ever leave me again.
Alan thought, if only he'd known earlier, if he came earlier to help her.
The woman he loved so much, Edith, she won't have to be suffer.
This is no time to be jealous, Thomas kept remind himself. Edith was dying. Mr. Mcmichael, the way he treated her, Thomas knew he was the one for Edith who would love and protect her.
It sounded silly but Alan talked to Thomas, and this was quite surprising Thomas. He talked as if Thomas was there. He begged Thomas not to take Edith away.
A single tear escaped from Thomas's eyes, he could sense something unusual. Death was knocking on the door. He knew, yet he didn't know who and when it will happen.
Alan and Thomas, two men who love the same woman, both felt helpless. The wind continued to howl and the snow continued falling, essentially sealing Edith into darkness.
