Considering Christmas was a big thing for you, there was a lot of Christmasy stuff that you never really did. You'd never watched Love, Actually, you never sat by a fireplace opening presents, and you never made a gingerbread house. You knew that gingerbread houses were supposed to be the cornerstone of Christmas time for kids, but your family never really bothered with it. The kits were always overpriced, baking your own took too much effort, and there were always a thousand reasons that your parents didn't want you making one. Now that you were an adult, there was nothing holding you back from the Christmas tradition.
That's how you found yourself in one of the kitchens in the Avengers Compound, replaying a video that had some tips and tricks for making a gingerbread house. You had things ready for the recipe from the video, pausing every now and then to reference the video and make sure you were doing things right. You'd just put the dough to chill in the fridge and were beginning to clean up the mess from making the dough when Loki walked into the kitchen. "What are you doing?" Loki asked, looking around the kitchen.
"Making a gingerbread house," you said, wiping down the counter.
"From what I know, it doesn't look like there's much of a gingerbread house here," Loki replied.
"Shut up, I'm making one from scratch," you told him with a roll of your eyes. "I just put the dough to chill if you want to help with like everything else.""Well, I suppose. I'm not doing anything else at the moment," Loki said, leaning against the counter.
"Don't make me regret inviting you to help," you said, picking up a knife the you had on the counter and pointing it at him. Loki laughed at your threat, putting his hands up in surrender. You and Loki had a decent enough friendship, each of you having enough sass and attitude to rival the other. That wasn't even mentioning the fact that your personalities complimented one another's so well.
"Okay, so what can I do?" Loki asked. You immediately directed him to start washing some of the dishes you'd dirtied in making the dough. With a joking groan, Loki followed your direction.
--
"Dough's ready," you told Loki as you pulled it out of the fridge. "And get off of the counter, you heathen."
"You're one to talk about being a heathen," Loki said, rolling his eyes but hopping off of the counter he was sitting on anyways. "What do you need me to do?"
"Flour the counter," you instructed him. "We need to roll out the dough so we can cut out the things for the house. I made like these outlines on parchment paper so the house can actually work out." With that, you grabbed the parchment outlines you'd made earlier from the other counter.
"Sounds like a lot of work for a house that's just going to get eaten," Loki commented, pouring flour on the countertop anyways. Even if he thought it was ridiculous, he wasn't about to ruin your fun for you.
"It's about the experience, dear Loki," you said, dropping the dough onto the floured counter. "Now, flour my rolling pin."
Once again, Loki followed your instructions, handing you the floured rolling pin once he was done. You rolled out the dough, getting everything ready to cut out the pieces. Once the dough was rolled out, you placed one of the parchment outlines on top of it and looked over at Loki. "C'mon, don't think I'm gonna let you miss out on the fun."
"And what fun is that?" Loki asked as he stepped forward. That was when you handed him the knife and suddenly his face lit up with realization and he smiled. "Oh, this is fun now."
"We like knives way too much to be normal," you joked, starting on cutting out a different part of the house.
"If we liked knives a normal amount then we'd be boring," Loki told you, the smile on his face contagious.
--
After cutting out the parts for the house and a couple gingerbread men and baking them, you and Loki were ready to actually make the gingerbread house. You melted the white chocolate you needed to as the cookies were cooling, aware of Loki's questioning looks. "It's to hold the house together," you explained.
"I thought you used icing for that," Loki commented.
"Normally yeah, but the video I was watching some professional baker was saying that it was actually easier to work with chocolate than icing," you told him. Loki nodded, accepting your explanation. He didn't really have much of a frame of reference for things like this, so it wasn't like he could truly argue with you on this.
Putting together the house was actually a lot more difficult than you though it would be. Working with the chocolate was probably easier than icing would've been, but you still struggled with getting the pieces to fit together in just the right way. It didn't help that Loki kept getting in your way, insisting that he could get it to work out more than you could. "Loki, step back or I actually will cut you," you threatened.
"Or you could listen to me and just try what I'm suggesting," Loki countered, taking a step forward instead.
"Fine, then you do it!" You gave in, frustrated. You took a step back with your hands up, letting Loki take control. You watched as he actually managed to get the roof of the gingerbread house in order and get it to stay in place. He looked back at you with a small smirk and your first instinct was to stick your tongue out at him. He laughed, beckoning you to come forward.
"Come on, dove. It's time to decorate this thing, if my knowledge is right," Loki told you.
"Yeah, it's right," you said, stepping forward once again. Loki pushed the decorating things you had put on the counter towards you, letting you take the lead once again. You smiled at him, your earlier frustration gone.
--
Once the gingerbread house was completely done, you looked over at Loki. "You know, that was actually pretty fun," you told him.
"I suppose it wasn't a complete waste of time," Loki agreed in that snarky way of his. You gave him a stern look, wanting him to give you his actual thoughts without that little cover. Loki gave a small sigh before speaking again. "Okay, I had fun too."
"We should do this again sometime," you said.
"No," Loki immediately responded. "Baking perhaps, but not another one of these damn houses. You were ready to kill me over that roof."
"I won't stab you next time! You actually know what you're doing," you laughed. Loki gave you a small smile before giving in to his own laughter. You definitely could say your first experience with a gingerbread house was a good one.
