In the very beginning of the game, there's a mission where John Marston goes out with Bonnie MacFarlane to find her Father, who has been missing for several hours. As they return with bad news of the deaths of former ranch-hands, they realize the barn is on fire. The reader will accompany the two and save the horses inside the burning barn.

~Relationship Status:
John Marston and the reader will be flirting with one another, but close to being in a relationship. (Remember, John isn't exactly too open with his feelings or good at expressing them.)

It was just another normal day at the MacFarlane ranch, everybody was rushing to get to their daily chores and folk had been going in and out of the General Store, their arms full of goods that they had just purchased.

The small ranch was full of life, horses whinnying from the corral. They were fine horses, the pretty ponies bucking and nickering at one another. Most of them had been tamed by me and John, but we were both taught by Bonnie MacFarlane. She was good person, someone with so much potential. But she also saved John's sorry ass back at Fort Mercer. Damn it, Bill.

Of course, the moment we try to make peace he can't get anything through that thick skull of his. From what happened years ago, you'd think he'd learn to at least know how to properly talk to others without needing to start a fight or trying to blow their brains out.

I went up to the house John had been staying in, which the MacFarlane's have been so kind to let him stay in. I've been offered a room in the MacFarland's residence, the pretty house was big inside. But since John got shot up at Fort Mercer, it costed the family 15 dollars to save the poor bastard's life. We've had to stay here and help around with the chores, but I honestly thought it was a win-win. The two of us have definitely learned more about a rancher's life, which would probably be really helpful to us in the future.

Bonnie even showed us how to break wild horses, which I successfully tamed myself a pretty mare. It had been much faster than my old horse, but I didn't have the heart to really set him free so I decided to stable him for now. I knocked on John's shack that he'd been given for the time he would be here, the small shack fit him for now. He was messy, and the inside was just as messy. Towers of crates had been stacked on one another, animal pelts had been scattered all over the floor, a cracked open chest had been sitting behind the bed, the bullets inside had been spilled out everywhere.

I cracked open the door to his house and he had been up, his hat in his hands. It had been Arthur's, his eyes fixed on his hat. His eyes were glossy, he missed the man terribly. He'd do anything to get his brother back, he'd kill to get his brother back. "I miss him too." I speak up and say as I lean against the wall, crossing my arms. He looks up and me, opening his mouth to say something but then closing it. He looks down in thought but all he could manage out was, "So do I."

"He'd be proud of you, you've turned into... a decent man." I say slowly, earning a chuckle from him. "A decent man?" Well, I mean. He'd been forced to come kill Bill Williamson since they have John's son, Jack. (In the story, let's say Abigail has passed away. Sorry!) That poor boy was growing up without his mother and now was in the hands of the government, scares me sometimes. "Your doing this for your boy." I look at him and he frowns slightly, "What kind of person would I be if I didn't?"
