Chapter Thirteen: The Truth

After School...

Nicholas sat with his head on the table. Him, Benjamin and Kyle decided to get some coffee at a cafe, but Nicholas felt defeated, and hadn't even touched his drink.

"Nick, it's fine," Benjamin said. "So what if Bastion found Susan? Someone would've found her anyways, and we still would've gotten in trouble."

"Ben, you don't understand! Bastion and I have been long-time rivals since elementary school! He's just too much of a dumbass to see!"

"Wait, since elementary school?" Kyle asked, an eyebrow raised.

"Yup. Fifth grade. We were close friends, until he decided to pull some shitty prank, ruining my reputation!"

"Seriously?"

"Yes! I can't remember exactly what he did, but what I do remember was I was pushed into a mud puddle and a group of kids surrounding me were laughing and pointing."

"Harsh," Benjamin commented.

"Mhm. When I went to middle school, nobody from my elementary said they were going to go there, so I could have a fresh start. But, Bastion went there as you know. You know the rest of the story."

"That's really not that bad..." Benjamin whispered.

Kyle remembered something. "Hey, Ben," he whispered, "I'm gonna go. Remember what I told you yesterday." He stood up and grabbed his backpack. "I gotta go," he said. "See you guys tomorrow?"

"Alright."

"'Kay..."

Kyle walked away. The two sat in silence for a few minutes, but Benjamin had finally brought up all his courage, and began to speak.

"Hey, uh, you know how whenever somebody hurts you in a fight, I step in and beat them? And how I don't do it for anyone else?"

"Yes...?"

"Well, the reason for that is..."

He took in some deep breaths.

"It'sbecauseI'minlovewithyouandyou'retheonlythingIcareaboutinthisworld!"

Nicholas looked at him for a second, trying to process what Benjamin had just said. Once he did, his face went red and he froze. He could barely make a noise.

"I knew it," Benjamin started, "I knew you wouldn't--"

"Ben, I..."

Nicholas looked at Benjamin straight in the eyes.

"I feel exactly the same way.

"Wait, r-really?"

"Yes. I just..Didn't know how to show it."

"Wow...I-I never thought you'd actually like me back."

"Well, I do. And I always will."

"So..Does this mean we're a thing now?"

"If you want us to be."

"More than anything."
