"Excuse me, Lillian?" Mattew said, walking up to Lillian after school.
"Hm? Hey, Matthew! What's up?"
"I um...Need some advice..."
"Really? What about?"
"I uh...Have a friend..That I care for very much and-"
"Ohhh! I see. You want to know how to confess to them?"
"Perhaps..."
"Trust me, I'm a pro at that stuff! Now, I know this'll sound cheesy, but you need to be yourself. It's a cliche, but it's a good one. If it's a close friend, they'll be able to see who you really are, so no putting up an act."
"Noted. Anything else?"
"Hm...Be honest with that person. Be true with your feelings, and they'll see how much you care. If you're telling them face-to-face or over the phone, I'd consider rehearsing a couple times beforehand. If you plan on texting them or giving them a note, good grammar and spelling can let the person know you're truly trying your hardest to let them know your ultimate feelings. This sounds bad, but expect the worst as well. It's best to think of the pros and the cons, because if you mainly think of the positives, and that person rejects you, you'll be sadder than you need to be. And, I believe that should be everything."
"What about gifts?"
"Don't go too overboard. For a simple confession, smaller things are probably best. A bouquet, a box of chocolates, even a hand-made card or something can show that you really love that person."
"Alright, thank you, Lillian. It truly means a lot to me."
"No problem! Anytime you need advice, call me. You've got my number from ninth grade for that group project we did!"
She laughed and walked away. Matthew felt lightheaded. He was never very good at articulating his emotions, so just the thought of confessing this love emotion everyone seems to feel made him nervous.
Matthew paced back and forth in his bedroom, looking over some notes. Once he had gotten home, he wrote down everything Lillian said before it left his mind.
"You're over-analyzing this, Matthew," he sighed. There's no reason for you to be writing all this down and taking notes along the way. Just buy him a flower and tell him you've got a crush on him. Simple. But...that doesn't feel like enough! He's an amazing person who deserves more." He sat down.
"Yes, he's amazing, but he's also a simple guy. He doesn't need some big, bright bouquet of flowers...How about...I get him a flower and some chocolate and ask him to meet at the park. I'll tell him that I've got a crush on him and ask if he feels the same."
He smiled to himself.
"That is not a bad idea."
Matthew grabbed his phone, keys and wallet at drove to a store near his house. He bought a bright blue rose and a decent-sized box of various chocolates and texted his crush soon after.
M: Hello, Tyler.
T: Hey Matt, what's up?
M: Could you meet me at the park around 5:45 today?
T: Why?
M: You'll find out once you're there.
T: Okay then
T: See you 🤗
M: Goodbye.
Matthew sighed. He was really doing this. He'd always seen Tyler as a close friend since Freshman year. Nothing more, nothing less. But during winter break, whenever Tyler called him, he'd feel butterflies in his stomach. He thought nothing of it until he discovered what Mark truly thought about Tyler, making Matthew realize how much he cared about his friend.
Matthew stood near the lake, the flower in one hand and chocolates in the other. He saw Tyler walking up to the park and he placed the flower in the same hand as the sweets so he could wave.
"Hey, Matt!" Tyler beamed, his eyes practically glowing as a wide, goofy grin spread into his face, causing Matthew to smile as well.
"Hello, Tyler."
"So, why'd you want to meet here?"
Matthew sighed. "I've had these...Strong feelings for you lately, and they've been very hard to ignore. Your smile, your bright eyes, your amazing personality...You're a very delightful person to be around. So..."
He showed Tyler the gifts.
"I-I was wondering if you'd like to be my boyfriend?"
Tyler stood there, dumbfounded. He smiled widely again and nearly knocked Matthew over with a hug.
"Of course, Matt! Of course!"
Matthew smiled and hugged back.
